Wills Point Chronicle, January 2, 1908:
Mrs. Mary A. Starnes died at Cedar Grove on December 22, 1907 at 2o'clock a. m. Her remains were interred in the Cedar Grove cemetery the following day, Rev. R. W. Oakes conducting the services. Mrs. Starnes was born January 2, 1816 in North Carolina and moved to Texas in 1848, locating at Pine Tree in Upshur county. She and her husband moved to Van Zandt county in 1865, settling at Cedar Grove, Mrs. Starnes dying on the old family homestead. Mr. Starnes died in 1879. There are eight children living, 38 grand children and 54 great grandchildren. The children are: W. C. Starnes of Alsa, J. J. Starnes of Wills Point, B. F. Starnes of Edgewood, J. A. Starnes of Brownwood, Mrs. Nannie Neill, near Wichita Falls, Mrs. Mattie Sullivan and Mrs. Mollie Yoes of Cedar Grove and Mrs. Lou White of the Center community. Mrs. Starnes was a pioneer of the county and her long life has been a useful one to the world. In the community where she has resided so long she was loved by all, and her exalted Christian character has left its impress [sic] on those about her.
