(2) Alcock, John P., Five Generations of the Family of Burr Harrison of Virginia 1650-1800, Bowie, MD: Heritage Books, Inc., 1991, pp. 33-34, 41: Burr [Harrison II] and Lettis [(Green) Smith, the widow of Edward Smith] were wed sometime in 1695 or 1696. She died in 1699, possibly in childbirth. In the 1940's a tombstone was found by Mr. George H.S. King near Woodbridge, Virginia on the south side of the Occoquan. In a photo taken by Mr. King and now in his papers at the library of the Virginia Historical Society we saw: TTIS ERIS TH DAVGHTER MR BV RISO DIED MARC THE 2 1698 AGED 16 DAYES We think filling in the eroded letters would yield LETTIS HERISON THE DAUGHTER MR BUR HERISON DIED MARCH THE 2 1698 AGED 16 DAYES. Mr. King translated the inscription: "Lettis Harrison, Daughter of Mr. Burr Harrison, Died March 2, 1698, Aged 16 Days." New style the year would be 1699. By her first husband Lettis had had three children; William, Edward, and Katherine. After his remarriage, Burr petitioned to be appointed guardian of the Smith orphans. Later he posted a bond of 30,000 pounds of tobacco for the management of the children's share of the estate of their maternal grandmother. . . . Lettis (Green) Smith Harrison was the daughter of William and Ann Green. Her father had arrived in Stafford Co. before 1670, when he received a grant of 1150 acres on Pohick Creek for the transport of twenty-three persons including himself and his son of that name. He died before 1685, and his widow married Martin Scarlett, a political rival of William Fitzhugh. Edward Smith, Letiss's first husband, died about 1695. When Ann Green Scarlett, grandmother of the Smith children, died in 1698, she named her son Joshua the executor of her estate. But in quick succession he and his widow, Jane Green, also died. George Mason was appointed Jane's executor. Mrs. Scarlett in October 1696 had deeded Joshua a tract on Occoquan Bay with the proviso that if he died without heirs, it was to pass to his sisters Ann and Lettice. Their husbands, Burr Harrison Jr. and Edward Barton, witnessed the deed.
