Brown, Vergie L., Hale Family, in History of Marshall, Oklahoma and Area - The First Century 1887-1987: Seekers of Oklahoma Heritage Association, 1987, pp. 163-164:

Edna Lee DeBell and Don Ecily Hale were united in marriage on the 27th day of July, 1909 at Cold Water [sic; should be Coldwater], Oklahoma, now called Hillsdale. Witnesses were Grace Hale, sister of the groom and S.S. Skaggs, cousin of the bride. Mr. Skaggs was from Nashville, now called Nash, Oklahoma. Presiding was Judge James B. Cullison. Parents of the couple were Mr. and Mrs. John Simon DeBell from Nodaway Co. Missouri and Mrs. [sic] and Mrs. John [sic; should be Joseph] Franklin Hale, formerly from Henery [sic; should be Henry] County, Iowa.

John Simon DeBell and wife Nancy Lee Skaggs were parents of Edna Lee and two boys, John Harvey and Joseph Pollard. They had moved from Nodaway County, Missouri near Marysville, Missouri. They had moved by train, packing their things in large wooden barrels.

John Harvey served in World War II [sic; should be I] and returned from the war in poor health due to mustard gas exposure. John Harvey married Elsie Koeley on October 27, 1889. Joseph Pollard also served in World War II [sic; should be I] and he married Bessie Lee Sharp on March 20, 1921. From this union two children were born: Dewey Will born January 5, 1924 and Juanita Lee on August 3, 1926 in Los Anemon [sic; should be Las Animas] County, Colorado.

Nancy Lee Skaggs was a descendant of Huguenots, French protestant dissenters from a Catholic France. . . .

Edna's Uncles Solomon and Milton Skaggs made the Cherokee Strip Run of 1893 and staked their claims--Solomon, 1 mile east of Nashville, later called Nash and Milton - 2 miles east and 1 mile south of Nashville, Oklahoma.

Edna's folks later sold the farm and moved to Vinita, Oklahoma where John Simon died Sept. 11, 1913 [and was] buried in Vinita, Okla. Nancy Lee lived with Don and Edna until she [Nancy Lee] died and was buried in Marshal, IOOF Cemetery March 9, 1917. Don and Edna Hale are buried in IOOF Cemetery in Marshall, Oklahoma.

Don - born Dec. 5, 1888 died August 28, 1965, [buried in] IOOF Cemetery.

      Edna born - Nov. 19, 1890 - died June 16, 1986.

John [sic; should be Joseph] Franklin Hale and wife, Susan Ann [sic; should be Susannah] Marchant, Don's parents, had two more boys, Roy and Claude, three girls, Clara, Grace, and Flossie. They had come from Henery [sic] County, Iowa in the early settlement of Oklahoma. Roy, making his run for a farm in Beaver County, staking his claim, and living in a dug out. Don used to go help him out. The two families [the Hales and DeBells] lived near each other near Coldwater now called Hillsdale, Oklahoma. As soon as Don got acquainted with Edna, he was smitten. He told his children later that she looked like a ripe peach and he courted her in a buggy with a fast stepping horse. She was lovely to look at and they later married and took up farming near Carrier, Oklahoma. Don's folks later moved into the town of Hillsdale and opened up a butcher shop, he butchered his own meat. Susan raised chickens, and [had] a garden to supplement the home. Susan had come via boat from England when she was in her teens from South of Kent. She would later tell the grandchildren about the parades in London to honor the Queen and also how to curtsey. She was a small lady and her husband tall.

Roy later moved to Enid and worked for the Santa Fe railroad, and in Hillsdale as well. He had never married. He met a lady that had three children, 2 boys and a girl. He courted and married Bessie Beck. Her children were Marvin Beck, Marion Beck, and Marie Beck.

Claude had spent some time in World War I. Later he moved to Wichita, Kansas where he married Venus Levings, they had one son, Claude Willis Hale. He married Gwen Jones. Claude worked for Cudahy Meats in Wichita, Kansas.

Clara married Jimmie Frost and they lived in Bison, Oklahoma. He was a letter carrier. They had one son - Victor Frost.

Grace never married staying at home with her folks who later retired and moved to Enid, Oklahoma.

Flossie married Walter Barclay [sic; should be Barkley] of Nash, Oklahoma. They had one daughter, Alice [sic; should be Alys].

The [Don and Edna] Hale farm was off highway 74 a quarter of a mile west - half way between Marshall and Covington, Oklahoma. There was plenty to do besides farming, milking cows, raising a garden, churning butter, baking bread for a large family and giving loafs away. Edna once stated she used around fifty pound[s] of flour a week. I don't know how many gallons of water we all helped carry from the well until later when we finally got an electric pump and sink. Before electric lights we used coal-oil lights, and then Alladan [sic] lamp that was kerosene with mantal [sic] power. In my teen years we drove a Model T, then later a Model A. Oh boy was the slang expression. There was [sic] also the chickens, hogs, cows, and horses we raised.

There were good times in the evening when chores were over. Mother played the pump organ and we would all sing. We played until dark sometimes with neighboring children. We then prayed and went to bed.

Recreation was the ball games, ice skating parties, Marshall falls where groups of families met to swim and picnic, square dances, party games, quilting parties and Sorghum cook offs. Bethel School is where we were educated and we had good teachers. I was named after one - Virgie Murphy. We had Literary Societies where we staged plays. Our folks put on some of them. There was [sic] other things to do in the community like pie suppers and spelling bees. After grade school some of the family went to Covington and part to Marshall to high school.

The main community church was Pleasant Hill where most of us were saved and went to hear the gospel. There was [sic] chuch dinners and baptizing in Hayward Lake. On Sunday afternoon there was [sic] ball games where the grown ups teamed up to compete. Don Hale was an extrovert, witty, good looking, and his word was good in the community. Edna was his help mate, a loving mother, good neighbor and entrovert [sic]. She won many blue ribbons for canning, her peace roses, and her bread.

I thank God for good parents and a Christian family community where I grew up. Everyone was always willing to share and help each other out in time of need. We must not forget the good country doctors, Dr. Wilkins, Dr. Parker and later Dr. DeWitt.

Children of Don and Edna Hale: Evelyn Irene and John Franklin, twins born December 27, 1910. The babies were fragile, blue babies. Franklin died the same day - December 27, 1910.
