    • (1) The Biographical Record of Rock Island County, Illinois, Chicago, IL: S.J. Clarke Pub. Co., 1897, pp. 197-198:

PETER FREDERICK MAAK, a successful gardener and dairyman of South Rock Island township, is a native of Holstein, Germany, born September 23, 1838, and is a son of Peter and Dorothea (Miller) Maak, who spent their entire lives in the fatherland, the former dying at the age of seventy-eight and the latter some years later. The father was a soldier in the German army, was a common laborer by occupation, and was a Lutheran in religious belief, as was also his wife. Of the four children born to them our subject is the only one now living. His paternal grandfather, who was quite a small man, engaged in farming, and died when between the ages of fifty and sixty years. The maternal grandfather also died in Germany when about sixty, leaving a large family.

During his boyhood and youth Mr. Maak, whose name introduces this sketch, attended the public schools of his native land and later served for several years in the German army. He was married October 12, 1867, to Miss Margaret, daughter of Hans and Dorothea (Jens) Wehrend, who never left the old country. The father, who was a hard-working, energetic man, passed away at the ripe old age of seventy-two years, and his wife was forty-three at the time of her death. Five of their seven children are now living, namely: Dietrich, John, Margaret, Katie and Doris. Hans Wehrend, the paternal grandfather of Mrs. Maak, died in Germany at an advanced age and left a large estate. The maternal grandfather also spent his entire life in that country and lived to an old age.

To Mr. and Mrs. Maak have been born four children, three sons and one daughter, as follows: Delos, now a resident of West Side, Crawford county, Iowa, who married Annie Schuldorf and has one son, Arthur Grover; William and August, who are still at home; and Rosa; now the wife of John Erbs, of South Park, and they have two sons, William and Martin.

In 1867 Mr. and Mrs. Maak came to America, and spent the first two years in Iowa, near Davenport, but with that exception have made their home in Rock Island county, living for a time near the Rock river. For about two years our subject worked for Mr. Carr and was later employed in the brickyard of Henry Case for four years. He then purchased ten acres of his present farm, to which he has added from time to time as his financial resources have increased until he now has sixty acres of highly improved land. He has erected a good dwelling, barns and other outbuildings, and the neat and thrifty appearance of his place testifies to his skill and ability in his chosen calling. For the past sixteen years he has devoted his attention principally to gardening and also does a large dairy business, commencing with five cows, but now has sixteen.

In political sentiment Mr. Maak is a Democrat, and in religious belief he and his wife are both Lutherans. Together they have labored earnestly and persistently until they have secured a comfortable competence and have secured the respect and esteem of all with whom they have come in contact.
