    Notes
    • (1) Susanna (LINDSAY) was evidently the second or subsequent spouse of David LINDSAY. See Genealogies of Virginia Families from the William and Mary College Quarterly, Volume III, p. 431 :

It appears from the . . . records in Northumberland that, in 1665, she [Susanna] had no child.

      (2) Lindsay, Margaret Isabella, The Lindsays of America, Albany, NY: Joel Munsell's Sons, 1889, pp. 36-37:

Tradition gives us nothing respecting our early foremother, the wife of the Reverend David, all endeavors to find out any thing of her amongst the elder relatives has been in vain. That she was living in Northumberland in January, 1665, two years prior to her husband's death, I ascertained through this old court item.

      I.

"Robert Lindsay made oath concerning a statement of one Richard Thompson who circulated a malicious and scandalous report about the wife of Mr. David Lindsay, for which he was indicted and convicted by Court."

Northumberland Court House Records, January, 1665.

      II.

"In May 1659 Susanna Lindsay is sued by one William Bound and he was non-suited."

      Northumberland Records.

What this malicious and scandalous statement made by Richard Thompson in reference to the wife of our early forefather was, the intervening years and silence of ages hide from us; imagination could conjure up many suppositions, and so weave some unhappy chapters in his book of life. Perhaps her nature and intentions were misunderstood, or perchance she was a very beautiful woman, and evil and cruel men lay pitfalls in her way, and did much to annoy and traduce her, seeing she scorned them.

We must remember the crude young country and the age she lived in, and doubtless the rough characters of the colonists at that early period. Whatever the malice was, the offender and slanderer was meted out punishment by the court of that day as the reader sees, and we, her descendants, must accept this as evidence of her being more sinned against than sinning.

Her Christian name was Susanna, according to the old court records. The second item of court of date prior to 1665, of May, 1659, speaks of a Susanna Lindsay being sued by one William Bound, and who is nonsuited. If this points to her, then we must believe that she was not living with her husband at that time as the suit is only in her name; again she comes off victorious in her suit, and William Bound, like Richard Thompson, has to retire ignominiously.

      (3) Susanna evidently died before 2 April 1667, when her husband, David LINDSAY, executed his will. Susanna is not mentioned in David's will.
