Finds master mix recipe during world travels

Vergie Brown, 412 N. Oakwood Terrace, No. 117, says baking and traveling are among her favorite things to do. A retiree, she keeps just as busy as when she was in the work force and enjoys every minute of it.

"There's nothing spectacular about me," says Brown, who readily admits she does have a great love for cooking and baking. She's happy to see the holidays approaching because that means she gets to do more of the things she loves.

Fruit cake is a favorite and she's already planning the apple fruitcake she'll send to her daughter. She sends one each year, where ever her daughter is located. This year, it's Aberdeen, Scotland. Her daughter, Doris Densmore, is the wife of Wes Densmore, executive vice president of Occidental Oil.

It's no secret that Brown thinks very highly of her son-in-law. She says his profession takes the Densmores to many locations around the world. Which, of course, means she gets to go visit them. She loved traveling when she was single, as well. She's been to numerous points in Europe, South Africa, Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan, China, Old Mexico, Canada, and parts of South America.

Brown enjoyed visiting her daughter's family when they were in the Philippines for six years. She's even a member of the Philippine Women's Club. "I practically lived there," she said. A widow, she is a member of the First United Methodist Church and enjoys volunteer work. She belongs to the Golden Swingers. a group of people who dance at the Hoover Building twice a week. Brown feels fortunate having some family near her. She has two sister, Evelyn Frederick and Elfa Lang, and one brother, Joseph Hale, all of Enid. She was reared "in Garfield County in the country, between Covington and Marshall."

In the professional world, Brown worked as a cosmeotologist in five states and was a nurse. She worked at Garfield County Health Department here during the 1960's.

She's always on the lookout for new recipes. While she was in the Philippines, she picked up a master mix recipe which makes it easy to bake things like muffins, breads, cookies and cakes. The recipe she shares for master mix was developed at Purdue University. It will make 29 cups of mix, enough to make one batch of every recipe printed.

      MASTER MIX:

      5 pounds all-purpose flour (20 cups)
2 1/2 cups dry milk solids
3/4 cup double acting baking powder
      3 tablespoons salt
      2 tablespoons cream of tartar
      1/2 cup sugar
      2 pounds vegetable shortening

Stir baking powder, salt, cream of tartar, dry milk solids and sugar into unsifted flour. Then sift all together; cut shortening into flour mixture until mix looks like cornmeal. Place in two Tupperware econo-canisters or one giant canister. Store at room temperature (even in the Philippines this will keep without refrigeration for 3 months.)

Use the basic mix for the following recipes.

[The article gives recipes for biscuits, pancakes, muffins, waffles, gingerbread, drop cookies, coffee cake, and yellow cake.]

      (2) Letter to the Editor, Enid News & Eagle, June 8, 1991, p. A-7:

      Please return bronze marker

      Dear Editor:

Someone took my brother's bronze World War II marker. His burial place is the Marshall Odd Fellows Cemetery, Marshall. He died Sept. 8, 1946, after the war.

One year the caretaker had run over it, bending it double. I found it in the trash heap. I brought it here in Enid to the VFW club. They straightened it up and polished it. I looked through the trash. It wasn't there so I cried.

Maybe someone will know where I can find another bronze marker. Glod [sic] bless our soldiers. I miss so many.
