      (2) O'Dell, Cecil, Pioneers of Old Frederick County, Virginia, Marceline, MO: Walsworth Publishing Company, 1995, pp. 92-93:

John Mendenhall [III], who signed the marriage record of Mordecai and Charity Beeson Mendenhall directly beneath John Mendenhall Sr.'s [Jr.'s] signature and above mother Susanna Mendenhall's signature, came to Virginia sometime after his brother Mordecai. John [III] and Mordecai Mendenhall's parents were John Sr. [Jr.] (b. 1688) and Susanna Pierson Mendenhall of Caln/East Caln Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania (Downingtown area) where they were taxed from 1715 through 1730.

John [Jr.] and Susanna of Caln Township sold land to Nathaniel Newlin on 14 September 1727 and on 4 May 1728. They had purchased this land on 3 March 1712/13 from "Abraham Musgrove, Eldest son and heir at Law of Thomas Musgrove late of Halifax in the County of York in the Kingdom of Great Britain, Clothier, deceased and David Price of Merion Township, in the Welsh tract, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania and his wife Hanah the widow and relict of Thomas Musgrove." On 25 November 1730, John and Susanna sold the remaining part of this land to William Pim, witnessed by Thomas McClun.

John Mendenhall Jr. [III] (b. 1715 c.) received four Fairfax land grants which consisted of: 303 acres located one mile south of the 1,650-acre patent land on 20 December 1751; 76 acres "where he lives" adjacent south of the patent land on 21 December 1751; 391 acres (assignee of John Jones, assignee of William Richa/Richey) on Dry Run adjacent north of the patent land on 8 May 1764 and 60 acres adjacent north of the 391-acre grant on 9 May 1764.

A millwright, John Jr.'s [III's] will was written on 6 August 1771 and proved on 15 June 1773. He left four sons: Mordecai, Stephen, Moses and James. He willed the 76 acres with house and orchard to son James "for as long as the sun shines, water runs and wood grows, never to be sold." He also left James 303 acres and 450 acres with the provision that John's wife Martha was to receive income from the estate until James became of age. He willed one shilling to his son-in-law Jacob Hildebrand, one shilling to Christian Hildebrand and one shilling to son-in-law Joseph Brian. Martha was born 14th day, 2nd month, 1713 and died the 28th day, 10th month, 1794. Their son James was born the 10th day, 12th month, 1751.
