    • (1) Elizabeth Ann Grubb:

      NOTES:

In the early 1990s compiler happened upon some STEININGER graves in Fulton and/or Marshall Counties in IN, whose owners were not familiar names. Compiler copied some of the data from these tombstones to keep on file "just in case" some of them became more meaningful as the family histories were recorded.

In Dec., 1997, compiler's husband found considerable data on the "BUEHLER" family and the connections with other surnames such as HASSENPLUG, STEININGER, etc. on GenServ. Digging back into earlier notes, compiler found records of an interview with Byron GILCHRIST, as well as notes from a letter Byron had dictated to his daughter in April, 1997. Attempting to tie all of these together and to straighten out some erroneous or conflicting data, compiler searched for the cemetery notes mentioned above, but did not locate them.

There exists much confusion in family tradition concerning Eliza (BEEHLER) STEININGER. In the early stages of this compiler's research, Margarett (STICKLER) STEININGER had written in a letter that Eliza had possessed a "sixth sense" that could well have saved the family from traveling in a large circle during their wagon journey from Ohio to Indiana. Since the BEEHLERs were found on the 1870 census in Indiana, and Eliza's place of birth was given as "Indiana" in 1864, this story did not seem plausible. Compiler thought this incident might have taken place in the reported move from Indiana to KANSAS; family stories per Margarett were that this was about 1855. Again this contradicts the data found on census records and other documents concerning members of the BEEHLER family and their time in IN. (Compiler found George and Mary BEEHLER on the Fulton Co. enumeration again in 1880, but Eliza was not enumerated in the household. Since the date of her marriage has been confirmed as 1883, this raises the question of her residence at census time in 1880.)

In April, 1997, Byron GILCHRIST had his daughter, Mary, write a letter to compiler in his behalf. In that letter Byron stated that Eliza had gone to ARKANSAS. Data found on the GenServ (HASSENPLUG), places Eliza's death in Fulton County, IN in 1932. Since compiler was unable to locate earlier cemetery notes, this could not be supported by tombstone data at this time.

Compiler's husband later found one of the children of Howard STEININGER's place of birth given as "KANSAS".

Until further research is completed, compiler has no recourse, but to report all of the above data without confirmation of accuracy (Jan., 1998).

Mr. HASSENPLUG, in his data which appears on the GenServ network, states that Eliza and Howard STEININGER had a child "boy STEININGER" who was born in KANSAS. No other data is included in the HASSENPLUG work.
