    Notes
    • (1) J. Douglas Sailor :

Jacob and Esther Crow Sailor, Sr.

Jacob moved with his parents to West Virginia at the age of eight. While his parents remained in West Virginia, Jacob moved to Ohio shortly before his marriage to Esther Crow about 1800, probably in (West) Virginia.

      (2) A household headed by Jacob SAILOR is listed in the 1820 census of Bethel Township, Miami County, OH.

Because of the sketchy nature of the information in the censuses before the 1850 census, the compiler generally assumes that the oldest male in the household was the head of the household; that the oldest female in the household was the spouse of the head of the household; and that the youngest males and females, if any, in the household were the children of the head of the household. These assumptions may not be correct.

Age ranges in the household headed by Jacob were as follows: 3 free white males under 10 years of age; 1 free white male between 26 and 45 years of age; 3 free white females under 10 years of age; 2 free white females between 10 and 16 years of age; and 1 free white female between 26 and 45 years of age.

Assuming that Jacob was between 26 and 45 years of age in 1820, he would have been born sometime between 1775 and 1794.

Assuming that Jacob's wife was between 26 and 45 years of age in 1820, she would have been born sometime between 1775 and 1794.

Assuming that three of Jacob's sons were between 0 and 10 years of age in 1820, those sons would have been born sometime between 1810 and 1820.

Assuming that three of Jacob's daughters were between 0 and 10 years of age in 1820, those daughters would have been born sometime between 1810 and 1820.

Assuming that two of Jacob's daughters were between 10 and 16 years of age in 1820, those daughters would have been born sometime between 1804 and 1810.

      (3) A household headed by Jacob SAILOR is listed in the 1830 census of Enochs Township, Monroe County, OH.

Age ranges in the household headed by Jacob were as follows: 1 free white male between 5 and 10 years of age; 1 free white male between 10 and 15 years of age; 1 free white male between 15 and 20 years of age; 2 free white males between 20 and 30 years of age; 1 free white male between 50 and 60 years of age; 1 free white female under 5 years of age; 2 free white females between 5 and 10 years of age; 2 free white females between 10 and 15 years of age; and 1 free white female between 40 and 50 years of age.

Assuming that Jacob was between 50 and 60 years of age in 1830, he would have been born sometime between 1770 and 1780.

Assuming that Jacob's wife was between 40 and 50 years of age in 1830, she would have been born sometime between 1780 and 1790.

Assuming that one of Jacob's sons was between 5 and 10 years of age in 1830, that son would have been born sometime between 1820 and 1825.

Assuming that one of Jacob's sons was between 10 and 15 years of age in 1830, that son would have been born sometime between 1815 and 1820.

Assuming that one of Jacob's sons was between 15 and 20 years of age in 1830, that son would have been born sometime between 1810 and 1815.

Assuming that two of Jacob's sons were between 20 and 30 years of age in 1830, those sons would have been born sometime between 1800 and 1810.

Assuming that one of Jacob's daughters was between 0 and 5 years of age in 1830, that daughter would have been born sometime between 1825 and 1830.

Assuming that two of Jacob's daughters were between 5 and 10 years of age in 1830, those daughters would have been born sometime between 1820 and 1825.

Assuming that two of Jacob's daughters were between 10 and 15 years of age in 1830, those daughters would have been born sometime between 1815 and 1820.

      (4) J. Douglas Sailor :

The following appears in the history of Elkhart County, Indiana:

"Olive Township in Elkhart County, Indiana, is in the western part of the county. This township was organized in the spring of 1836 by Cornelius Terwillinger, Jacob Sailor, Frederick Morris, Samuel and Levi Martin, and David Allen. Of the above named persons, Jacob Sailor was the first settler here, having arrived in the early part of 1834. The first election in the township was held in April 1837 at the home of Issac Morris. The voters were Daniel Michael, Jacob Sailor, Sr., Jacob Sailor, Jr., Samuel Martin, Moses Sailor, William Sailor, Cornelius Terwillinger, James Dodge, Issac Morris, Aaron Medders, and Frederic Morris. The latter three were sons-in-law of Jacob. "

A bronze plaque in the Elkhart County Historical Museum in Bristol, Indiana commemorates Jacob Sailor as the first settler in Olive Township, Elkhart County.
