    • (1) Elizabeth Ann Grubb:

      NOTES:

In the spring of 1993, Margarett STEININGER, a desc. of David B. MOW responded to a letter from compiler with information about the MOW ancestors.

Compiler had located a number of MOWs in Fulton County, IN on the 1850 Census. Among these were a 59-year-old Samuel MOW and Adam MOW, the father of David B. MOW. Both were enumerated in the home of David MOW, Jr. Per Margarett's research, interviews with two genealogists who had worked on the MOW family, indicated that David, Jr. and Adam were both sons of this Samuel MOW, but with two different mothers.

Per the Census record, John Samuel MOW was born in KENTUCKY. His occupation was listed as laborer.

Just four households from David MOW, Jr., on the 1850 census, there was a David MOW, Sr. whose age was given as 51; he too was born in KENTUCKY. There was a James MOW enumerated as the only other person in this household, and he was 16 years old.

While searching for the death date for James Samuel MOW (b. 1854), compiler sent a list of MOW ancestors to R. WILLIAMS, asking her to search the records at the Board of Health in Rochester, IN. On her response, Ms. WILLIAMS listed the 1852 death date and said this was the only James Samuel she could find. She noted that this was not consistent with the 1854 birth date for the James Samuel that compiler was looking for.

Going back over all the available data, compiler has presumed this 1852 death date is for John (not James) Samuel MOW. In Jan. 1996, Wilma FOLTZ responded to a letter from compiler addressing this confusion. Per Wilma, John Samuel MOW was the father of Adam MOW; John Samuel was married at least twice, but the name of his first wife was unknown. Rebecca ARMSTRONG/STILES was his second wife, but the date and place of marriage is uncertain. John and Rebecca are both buried at Citizen's Cemetery in Rochester, IN.

Quoting from Wilma's letter: "Years ago I went to visit a Mabel BOBBITT (MOW related) at Waldron, IN, near Shelbyville. She took me to a cemetery at Norristown where some of the early WALKERs and ARMSTRONGs were buried. She showed me one stone & I thought she said it was Rebecca's grave. So when I found John Samuel's stone in Rochester, I read the Rebecca stone that she was 12. Later . . . I found that it was Rebecca, John Samuels wife?42 instead of 12." (The latter referring to a stone in Rochester)

John Samuel MOW's date of birth has been calculated from the dates on his tombstone and agrees with his 1850 census age.

Per the one-page history of Robert E. MOWE, John Samuel's father was a German Lutheran Minister who served in INDIANA, OHIO and KENTUCKY. His arrival in KY would coincide with the approximate time of John Samuel's birth in what was then Mercer County.

The discovery of the World Family Tree disc and the entries in Ms. Salzer's web site for the "John Samuel MAU, I. Family" have added links to John Samuel, III's family chain! Evidently there were two sons in the John Samuel MAU, II family who carried the given name "John"! John Adam MAU was born in Westmoreland County, PA in 1782, before the famly migrated to Kentucky; John Samuel, III was born in Kentucky as were his other siblings. The reason for naming two sons "John" is uncertain. Usually this happened when the older son bearing the name died, but according to data found in both the WFT CD and in the compilation of Ms. Stazer, the older John Adam did not died until about 1851. It is possible that the older son used "Adam" as his given name, but this is conjecture on compiler's part.

Arlene Stalzer writes in her compilation of this family:

. . . According to the letter from Mr. HUFFMAN some of this information came from a translated version of "The Journal of John Samuel Mau" by Willard D. Allbeck as published in the Lutheran Quarterly volume and date unknown. This version came to me from Elmo W. Huffman, 5117 "U" Street, Sacramento, CA 95817, March 10, 1973 . . . Samuel Mow (1789-1852) was born. . . . By the time Samuel (as he was known) was fifteen his parents had resettled in Montgomery County, Ohio. He married his first wife in Ohio by about 1808. Nothing is known about her, but she apparently died between 1825 and 1827. About the same time, probably after his wife had died, Samuel took his children and joined his brothers in Shelby County, Indiana. Samuel Mow married his second wife in Union County, Indiana on 25 Feb. 1827. She was Rebecca Armstrong, a widow. John Samuel Mow was in Fulton County, Indiana by about 1839, settling near Richland Center, north-west of Rochester. The record ends with this . . .

Ms. Stalzer gives the following sources for this data:

      Family records of Mabel Bobbitt

Family records of Wilma (Mow) Foltz

Family records of Baxter Mow (a member of another Mow clan, but he apparently interviewed many of the descedants of John Samuel Mow, and compiled a genealogy of them about 1947.)

In 1973 copies of "The Journal of Samuel Mau" and "The Mow Family" by Baxter Mow were in possession of Wilma Foltz of Rochester, Indiana.

Mable Bobbitt of Waldon, IN also had family information on these four generation of the Mau/Mow Clan.

In the "Descendants of John Samuel Mau" report found by compiler in 2002, the unknown compiler has reprinted excerpts from John Samuel, Sr.'s day book.

Upon the birth of this son, John Samuel, II, his father recorded the following entry:

". . . On September 23 in the year of our Saviour Jesus Christ 1789, the dear God gave us again a son. We lived at that time in the congregation near Danville, in Mercer County, Kentucky. In holy baptism he received the name John Samuel. Dear God, be merciful, bless and guide him with thy grace and dignify him later to become thy servant. Let Adam, the first born of the sons, and this little Samuel both become true and faithful servants of thy congregation. Amen. . . ."

NOTE: The Broderbund WFT disk shows John Samuel MOW's place of birth as "Danville, KY" and in biographical notes, it states "Mercer County". Danville is now in Boyle County, KY. Boyle was formed in 1842 from Mercer and Lincoln Counties. At the time of John Samuel's birth, Danville would have been in Mercer Co.

      6. Original Day Book of John Samuel Mau, translated from the German, transcribed and published by "The Lutheran Quarterly", May 1961; included in "Descendant Report for John Samuel Mau", unknown compiler (bef. 2002).

      (2) A household headed by Samuel MOW is listed in the 1840 census of Jackson Township, Shelby County, IN.

Listed in Samuel's household are 2 free white males between 10 and 15 years of age; 1 free white male between 50 and 60 years of age; 1 free white female between 5 and 10 years of age; and 1 free white female between 20 and 30 years of age.

Assuming that Samuel is the free white male listed in the 1840 census as then being between 50 and 60 years of age, he would have been born sometime between 1780 and 1790, according to the 1840 census.

Assuming that 2 of Samuel's sons were between 10 and 15 years of age in 1840, those sons would have been born sometime between 1825 and 1830, according to the 1840 census.

Assuming that 1 of Samuel's daughters was between 5 and 10 years of age in 1840, that daughter would have been born sometime between 1830 and 1835, according to the 1840 census.

Assuming that 1 of Samuel's daughters was between 20 and 30 years of age in 1840, that daughter would have been born sometime between 1810 and 1820, according to the 1840 census.

      (3) Samuel MOW is listed in a household headed by his son, David MOW, in the 1850 census of Richland Township, Fulton County, IN.

Samuel is listed in the 1850 census as a laborer who was then 59 years of age; therefore, according to the 1850 census, he was born in about 1791. According to the 1850 census, he was born in KY.
