      (2) Robert Charles Anderson, The Great Migration Begins: Immigrants to New England, 1620-1633 [database online], Provo, UT: Ancestry.com, 2000:

      EDMUND JAMES

      ORIGIN: Unknown

      MIGRATION: 1630

      FIRST RESIDENCE: Watertown

FREEMAN: Requested freemanship 19 October 1630 [MBCR 1:80].

OFFICES: Watertown selectman, 30 December 1637 [WaTR 3].

ESTATE: In the Watertown Inventory of Grants "Edmond James" is seen to have received the full complement of proprietorial grants: 4?? acre homestall, 3 acres of meadow, six acres of upland, 40 acres of Great Dividend, 6 acres of Beaverbrook Plowland, 8 acres of remote meadow and 6 acres at the Town Plot [WaBOP 5, 7, 9, 11, 101]. At the time of the Composite Inventory four of these parcels are seen in the hands of Thomas Andrews and presumably the other three parcels had passed through his hands as well [WaBOP 50, 134-35].

The inventory of the estate of "Mrs. Reana Frost," taken 3 January 1675/6, totalled ??78 10s. 1d., of which ??36 was real estate: "land in Watertowne Field, 3 acres," ??12; and "the house, barn & yard with the houseright," ??24 [MPR 4:272-74].

BIRTH: By about 1610 (and probably earlier).

DEATH: After 24 March 1639/40 (mentioned in Watertown town records as if alive [WaTR 6]) and before 11 August 1640 (marriage contract of widow).

MARRIAGE: By unknown date Reana _____; she m. (2) contract 11 August 1640 William Andrews of Cambridge [MLR 3:7]. He died in 1652 and she married (3) Cambridge 2 May 1654 Robert Daniel. He died Cambridge 6 July 1655 and she married (4) before 12 April 1669 Edmund Frost. She died after 1672, being named in the will of her fourth husband [NEHGR 88:383-86, citing MLR 3:364 for the marriage to Frost], and before 3 January 1675/6 (date of her inventory). There is no evidence that she had any children by any of her husbands.

      CHILDREN: None recorded.

COMMENTS: Since the Andrews family acquired the proprietary share of Edmund James, they should have been granted a farm in 1642, but they were not. Such grants were made only to resident proprietors; certainly William Andrews was not a resident of Watertown in 1642, and we do not know when the land was transferred to Thomas Andrews.

Edmund James received six acres in the Beaverbrook Plowlands and eight acres in the Remote Meadows. This would normally indicate a family with a number of children, and might even indicate the birth of twins in the brief interval between these two grants. There is no evidence, however, that Edmund and Reana James had any children, so the size of these grants must have been based on sizable holdings of cattle. Unfortunately the estate of Edmund James was not probated, so we have no inventory which might confirm this.

Savage engages in some unnecessary confusion with another Edmund James, of Newbury, but there is no connection between him and the Watertown man.
