    • (1) Starnes, H. Gerald & Starnes, Herman, Of Them That Left a Name Behind - A History of the Starnes Family, Baltimore, MD: Gateway Press, 1983, pp. 727-735:

THOMAS STARNES, born 12 Oct. 1781 and wife Mary Elizabeth Bruner Starnes, born 25 Jan. 1787 are progenitors of the Fountain Co., Indiana Starnes and of those who migrated from Indiana to Platt Co., Mo., later to Leavenworth Co., Kansas. Some have retained the early Starns spelling of their surname, some spell the name Starnes.

Thomas Starnes, b. 12 Oct. 1781 presumably in Washington Co., Va., d. 22 Dec.1833 is buried in Zackmire Cemetery, near Wallace, Fountain Co., Indiana. Research of the Virginia and Tennessee Starnes indicates he was a grandson of immigrant ancestor Frederick Staring (Starnes), Sr., and a son of Thomas Starnes, Sr., b. ca. 1734, d. ca. 1818 and wife who lived in Southeast Virginia until after the Revolution, when the Starnes of Southwest Virginia moved into North Carolina and Greene Co., Tennessee. Thomas Starnes, Sr., shows up in North Carolina before showing up in the Tennessee records. One Thomas Starnes first appears on the Tax list of Greene Co., Tenn., in 1805. Thomas Starnes, Jr., appears in 1811. It's my concerted opinion that the Thomas Starnes listed above 1781-1833 is really Thomas Starnes, Jr., listed on the 1811 Tax List.

Thomas Starnes, 1781-1833 married Mary Elizabeth Bruner, b. 25 January 1787, died 6 September 1871. They were married 21 Nov. 1807 in Greene County, Tennessee. Much of the information to follow on the descendants of the Thomas Starnes (1781-1833) family is from records researched and compiled by a descendant, George H. Livengood of 2803 West Eaton Street, Seattle, Washington. Information on the descendants of Thomas Starns, Jr. (1825-1905) was furnished to this writer by one of his grand-daughters, Mrs. Vena Wisner of Milton Freewater, Oregon.

CHILDREN OF THOMAS AND MARY ELIZABETH B. STARNES

      1. Jacob Starnes, b. 1803 Greene Co., Tenn., d. 22 September 1838, Fountain Co., Indiana is buried in Zackmire Cemetery, near Wallace, Ind. He married Mary _____, b. 31 May 1811 in Tenn., d. 3 July 1857 and is buried by her husband. Jacob does not appear in the 1830 census of Fountain Co., Indiana, but it appears his widow was living with sister-in-law Margaret Starnes, later Margaret Day. Jacob taught school in Indiana according to descendants of Thomas.

      2. Margaret Starnes, b. 1809/10, Greene Co., Tenn., d. ?, m. 18 Aug. 1834, John Allen, b. ca. 1812 in Kentucky, d. 12 Jan. 1899, age 87. He is buried in Starnes Cemetery, Leavenworth Co., Kansas. Margaret is probably buried in the same cemetery, no marker. After 1850, ca. 1856 they moved to Missouri, and later to Leavenworth Co., Kansas. Settled about one mile south of Margaret's' brother Charles Starnes. . . .

      3. Catherine Starnes, b. 18 May 1811, Greene Co., Tenn., d. 22 Feb. 1850 age 38 yrs., 9 mo., 4 days, she is buried in Zackmire Cemetery near Wallace, Ind. She married Baxter Hamilton. No other record is present.

      4. Charles Starnes, b. 13 Jan. 1813, Green[e] Co., Tenn., d. 14 July 1865, Leavenworth Co., Kansas. Probably buried in Starnes Cemetery on his farm. He married 29 May 1834, Christina Myers, Fountain Co., Ind., b. 7 Oct. 1815 in Rowan Co., N. C., d. 15 July 1855 (daughter of Jacob Myers, b. 2 March 1786 Rowan Co., N. C., and wife Sarah _____, b. 11 March 1787 Rowan Co., N. C., d. 16 Sept. 1870. Buried in Starnes Cemetery, south of Leavenworth, Kansas. The mother, Sarah, lived with Christina in her last years).

Charles moved from Lee Township, Platte Co., Mo., from Fountain Co., Ind., about 1838. With Abraham Zabrisky, he was appraiser of the estate of a remote relative, Jacob Bowman. . . . A grandson states that he moved to Leavenworth Co., Kansas in 1856, which agrees with dates of birth of his children, as shown in census records, son James having been born 1857 in Kansas, while daughter, Melinda was born 1856 in Missouri.

He was one of the few Democrats of the Kansas Legislature which met in 1861; did some freighting over the Sante Fe Trail for the government and at one time was the largest land owner in Leavenworth Co., Kansas. The 1840 census, Platte Co., Mo., shows him as the owner of 2 slaves. His farm was about 1 mile south of the city of Leavenworth, and his brother George, lived near by. . . .

      5. John Starnes, b. 1815, Greene Co., Tenn., d. 16 August 1901. Buried Zackmire Cemetery, Fountain Co., Ind. He married 15 Aug. 1836, Fountain Co., Ind., Mary Day, b. 15 July 1818 in North Carolina. John was a farmer in Fountain Co., Indiana. . . .

In 1860 both John's mother, Mary Elizabeth (Bruner) Starnes, and mother-in-law, Mary Day, are in his household. In 1870 only his mother was with him, Mary Day probably deceased.

      6. Elizabeth Starnes, b. ca. 1818, Greene Co., Tenn., d. ca. 1861/2, married 1 Feb. 1836, Jacob Livengood, b. 14 Sept. 1809, Rowan Co., N. C. He was a son of Hartman and Sybilla (Myers) Livengood. He died at Omaha, Neb. ca. 1863 in an accident, body taken to his home in Elmon, Mo., for burial. A descendant states that Jacob came from the "Sugar Creek District" of Fountain Co., Ind., and in 1854 the family removed to Nodaway Co., Mo., Post Office, Elmo. . . .

      7. Barbara Starnes, b. ca. 1818, Greene Co., Tenn (see Elizabeth, No. 6, for relative age), d. after 1860. Married first, 25 Oct. 1837, Fountain Co., Ind., Elias Livengood, born Rowan Co., N. C., 19 Sept. 1811 (son of Hartman and Sybilla (Myers) Livengood), d. 1848, Fountain Co., Indiana. . . .

Barbara Starnes, b. ca. 1818 (Livengood by former marriage) was married a second time 27 May 1852, Fountain Co., Ind., to Bartlett Maddox, a widower with three children, of Hardin Co, Iowa, where Barbara's brothers-in-law, Levi and Solomon Livengood, had gone about 1851. . . .

      8.Henry Starnes, b. 2 May 1821, Greene Co., Tenn., d. 3 April 1893, Fountain Co., Indiana, is buried in Zackmire Cemetery. He m. ca. 1842 Catherine Myers, b. 24 Feb. 1824 in N. C., d. 26 Aug. 1907, buried Zackmire Cemetery.

9.Thomas Starns, Jr. b. 7 August 1825 Greene Co., Tenn., d. 15 June 1905 at Corvallis, Benton Co., Oregon, married 30 May 1848, Susan Lewis, b. 10 July 1832 in Perry Co., Ky., d. 1 Nov. 1910, Goldendale, Washington. They are buried in Chrystal Lake Cemetery, Carvallis, Oregon.

"Thomas Starns, Jr. removed from Platt Co., Missouri to Leavenworth Co., Kansas ca. 1855. He was a Methodist Minister and preached 1n Kansas and bordering states. He was a Captain of a Wagon Train from Kansas to Western Oregon in 1876. The story of his preaching was made into a picture and shown on television, called Seventh Day."

Thomas Starns, Jr. settled in Benton Co., Oregon, that part of Oregon known as the Willamett Valley. He continued his ministry in Oregon. He was a "Circuit-rider" often traveling by horse back to reach isolated settlements. He and his wife Susan were sent by the Indian Agency as Missionaries to the Indians at Fort Klamath, near Klamath Falls, Oregon where he served 6 years.

      10. George Washington Starnes, b. 24 Aug. 1827, Green Co. Tenn, d. 4 April 1917 (parents moved to Indiana when he was 3 weeks old). He married first 11 July 1848, Fountain Co., Ind., Abigail Livengood, b. N.C., 14 Aug., 1832, d. 1867 and buried in Starnes Cemetery. Daughter of Thomas (Hartmann or Hardman) and Eva Shuler Livingood.

According to a history of Leavenworth Co., Kan., he moved from Lee Twp., Platte Co., Mo. where he had gone shortly after his marriage and farmed. On March 14, 1855 took land about six miles south of Leavenworth, Kansas, where he resided until his death. This account states that when Abigail, his first wife died, she left a family of 5 sons and 2 daughters, which agrees with the 1870 census enumeration.

His farm adjoined that of his brother, Charles, who used the spelling "Starns", while George favored "Starnes". He was a farmer and stock raiser. . . .

George Washington Starnes . . . was married a second time to Sarah Espy, 1875, (1841-1900).

      11. Mary Ann Starnes, youngest child of Thomas and Elizabeth Bruner Starnes, was b. 4 April 1829 in Montgomery Co., Indiana, d. 7 Oct. 1832, age 3 years, 6 months, 3 days. Buried in Zackmire Cemetery in Fountain Co, Indiana.

      (2) According to Starnes, H. Gerald & Starnes, Herman, Of Them That Left a Name Behind - A History of the Starnes Family, Baltimore, MD: Gateway Press, 1983, p. 727:

Research of the Virginia and Tennessee Starnes indicates he [Thomas Starns (1781-1833)] was . . . a son of Thomas Starnes, Sr., b. ca. 1734, d. ca. 1818 and wife who lived in Southeast Virginia until after the Revolution, when the Starnes of Southwest Virginia moved into North Carolina and Greene Co., Tennessee.
