Jonathan Frost fought on the side of the British during the Revolutionary War and was killed near his home on 13 December, 1780. Military records obtained by the author from the Public Record Office in London indicate that at the time of his death, Jonathan Frost held the rank of major in the Fairforest Regiment of Militia. His wife, Mary, was paid thirty pounds sterling after her husband's death for six months service in the militia. A dispatch from Colonel Thomas Pearson to authorities in Charleston, South Carolina, states that the bearer of the dispatch, Mrs. Frost, was the widow of Jonathan Frost, a Major of Militia. He further stated that "Since the Death of her husband the enemy has reduced her from a State of Wealth and Ease to Poverty and Want. I therefore hope your Honour will order that Major Frost's Pay be Given to his widow in order to Relieve the Sufferings of her self and helpless Children."

A letter written by Rhoda Frost, daughter-in-law of Mary (Benson) Frost, to relatives in Tennessee stated that Mary married again after the death of her husband, Major Jonathan Frost. The name of the second husband has not been determined, but Mary Frost named in her will four additional children besides the known Frost children. These children of the second husband were Barnet, Elizabeth, Rachel, and William. Nothing further was learned about these children. Rhoda Frost wrote that the O'Neall family raised the Frost children, presumably after the death of Major Frost. Mary (Benson) Frost left a will in Union District, South Carolina, dated 25 December, 1796, and proven 2 January, 1797. It is possible that the extra children listed with James Copeland on the 1800 census could have been the younger children of Mary (Benson) Frost. . . .

Mary Benson, the wife of Jonathan Frost, was probably born about 1754 and was the daughter of James and Martha (Quinn) Benson.

      (3) A letter written by Rhoda FROST, daughter-in-law of Mary (BENSON) FROST, to relatives in Tennessee stated that Mary married again after the death of her husband, Major Jonathan FROST. However, the compiler not seen proof of any such marriage, and Mary did not mention any second husband of hers in her will. If any such second husband of Mary had been living at the time she executed her will, she would presumably have mentioned him in her will.

      (4) In her will executed 25 December 1796 and proved 7 January 1797, Mary (BENSON) FROST bequeathed the remainder of her estate to her "four youngest Childron namly Barnet Elizebeth Rachel and William to be paid them when they Come to full age."

All of those four children, whose surname is not specified in Mary's will, were under 21 years of age as of 25 December 1796.

Mary's husband, Jonathan FROST, died on 13 Dec 1780, and she reportedly thereafter married a man whose name is unknown to the compiler. However, since Mary went by the surname of FROST at the time she executed her will, there are several possible explanations for this seeming inconsistency, including (1) the possibility that the surname of her reported second husband was also FROST; (2) the possibility that her four youngest children were really children of her reported second husband and another woman; and (3) the possibility that she was not married to the father of her four youngest children.

In any event, Mary's four youngest children were apparently born sometime between 13 December 1780 and 25 December 1796.
