    Notes
    • (1) Beers, Josephine W. Beers and Prindle, Paul W., "The Gray or Grey Family," The American Genealogist, Vol. 64 (July 1989), pp. 165-166:

WILLIAM GREY [sic], son of William Gray, was probably the one of that name baptized at Harrow on the Hill, co. Middlesex, on 11 Aug. 1611. As citizen and merchant tailor of London, he drew his will on 1 Sept. 1657 (proved there on 18 Nov. 1663). Copyhold property in Hamerton, Hackney parish [co. Middlesex], and other lands in Hackney were left to his four children: Abraham, Josiah, Rebecca, and Susanna. They also received rents in Barking, East Ham, and West Ham, co. Essex, "and all that Last of red herrings due unto me yearly from the bayliffs of Great Yarmouth in the County of Norfolk."

He left £5 to each of his brothers, "John Grey of New England" and Henry Grey. To brother Isaac Grey, buff coat and £5. Also mentioned were his brother-in-law Mr. John Price, and his cousin John Smith, potter. Wife Susanna to be executrix and guardian to all the children; overseers: brother-in-law John Price and brother Isaac Grey. . . .

The mention of property in Hackney, and the names of three of his children, leave no doubt that the testator was a son of William Gray of Harrow on the Hill.

A comment was appended to the copy of the will published in NEHGR in 1888 and repeated in the book version of Waters' Gleanings: "Savage has several John Grays who were in New England - Editor." When he published the will of William Gray of Harrow on the Hill, Waters stated that "The first two sons named in the foregoing will were doubtless the John and Henry Gray who were found in Fairfield, Connecticut, A.D. 1643 or thereabouts (see will of William Gray, their brother and eldest son of the foregoing testator. . .)". . . . On page 14 of his "Additions and Corrections" to Fairfield Fams. . . , Donald Lines Jacobus stated without qualification that Henry and John Gray, the founders of the family in Fairfield, were brothers of William Gray, citizen and merchant tailor of London.

Known children (GRAY or GREY) of William, all probably by his wife Susanna (____), order uncertain:

      i ABRAHAM.

      ii JOSIAH.

      iii REBECCA.

      iv PRISCILLA.

      v SUSANNA.

      (2) Mary Sibyl Gray May et al., A History of One Branch of the Fairfield, Connecticut, Gray Family, Middletown, CT: Godfrey Memorial Libary, 1953, p. 3:

William Gray citizen and merchant tailor of London made his will Sept. 1, 1657. Proved 18 November, 1663. He leaves to his son Abraham the copyhold house and orchard in Hamerton in Parish of Hackney. Hackney is the parish from which John and Henry Gray came. He leaves to these two brothers "of New England" the sum of five pounds as an expression of his love. He spoke of his brother Isaac Gray and mentions his daughter and wife with the same names as William Gray of Harrow [on the Hill] used thus proving the relationship of the family.
