      Henry Jackson Lowe

      Farmer and carpenter, section 1, post office Hopkins, occupies a front rank among old settlers and progressive enterprising men of this County. He is a native of Pennsylvania, and was born in 1828. He was there raised to manhood, following the occupation of contracting and building. At the age of 22 he emigrated to Lee County, Illinois, where he resided to 1868, when he moved to Missouri and located in this County (Nodaway). Here he now owns eighty acres of good average land, most of which is under cultivation. Since his residence here he has, besides following farming, worked his trade in and about Hopkins, and has built some of the most substantial buildings in that place. A member of the M.E. Church to which he is a liberal contributor.

      STATE OF Nebraska COUNTY OF Butler SS:

      In claim No. 664,8313 of Henry J. Lowe of Co. I of the 89 Regt. of Ills. Vols. Personally appeared before the undersigned duly authorized to administer oaths within and for said County, Henry J. Lowe aged 60 years whose P.O. is Rising City, County of Butler State of Nebraska, who being duly sworn, states in relation to said claim as follows:

      In 1862 the fall of the year in going from Kentucky (Crab Orchard) to Nashville Territory. The Company teamster was taken Sick and the Captain ordered me to go and take Charge of and drive his team and while I was riding and driving it I was thrown violently forward on to the horn of the Saddle and thereby sustained a rupture upon the right side near the Private. I never was treated in the service for it because I thought I could get along without treatment. I wanted to do my duty and did not feel like giving up so that at that time it continued to grow worse, I tired [sic] to wear a truss but it hurt me so bad I was compelled to take it off. I [sic] trouble [sic] me all the time and is gradually growing worse.

      Affiant further states that he has no interest in this claim or its prosecution. [Note by compiler: the latter statement was not true. The affiant was the claimant.]

      (13) Obituary:

      Henry J. Lowe, was born in Lycoming County, Pa., July 20, 1828, died of dropsy near this city May 17, 1898. He was married to Abigail Holdren, September 22, 1848; they moved from Pennsylvania to Illinois in 1850, and from there to Missouri in 1869. They came to Butler County, Nebraska, in 1884, purchasing the home where they since lived. Seven children were born to them of whom two preceded him to the great beyond. Two sons and three daughters remain. One daughter lives in Los Angeles, Cal., one at Des Moines, Iowa, and one in Butler County, Nebr. One son resides in Portland, Oregon and the other in Wyoming.

      Deceased was converted, and joined the Rising City M. E. Church June 8, 1891, and since then - when health permitted - was in his place in the house of worship, always ready to help with his presence, voice and means.

      He was a defender of his country in the late war, enlisting on August 14, 1862, as a private in Co. I, 89 Illinois Volunteer Infantry; and was honorably discharged June 10, 1865. He was mustered into E.M. Stanton Post No. 20, G.A.R., in this city March 3, 1888

      The funeral was held at the M. E. church, to-day, at 11 o'clock a.m., Rev. G. M. Jones, his pastor, preaching the sermon, the obsequies being under the auspices of the Grand Army of the Republic, which conveyed the deceased to Circle Mound Cemetery, where the body was laid to rest with impressive services according to the ritual of the G.A.R.

      The bereaved wife, sons and daughters of the deceased have the deep sympathy of many friends.
