    • (1) Dennis Nicklaus Genealogy (Mother's Side), a WorldConnect Family Tree:

Reuben Ballard was born Abt 1748 in VA or NC, and died Nov 1820 in Warren County, KY. He married Absilla A. "Assala'' Ballard, daughter of Abraham Ballard and Elizabeth Sumner.

Children of Reuben Ballard and Absilla A. "Assala'' Ballard are:

      i. Chloe Ballard was born Abt 1770, and died Aft 1844.

ii. Bathsheba Ballard was born 1774, and died Bef 1850.

iii. John Ballard was born 19 Apr 1779, and died 1 May 1848 in Marshall County, IA.

iv. Bentley Ballard was born Abt 1780.

      v. Loving James "Levin'' Ballard was born Bet 1770-1780 in VA, NC or GA, and died 10 Oct 1850 in Union County, IL.

vi. William Ballard was born Bet 1781-1784. He married Nancy Bailey 7 Jan 1797 in Mercer County, KY. He married Susannah Early 21 Apr 1809 in Warren County, KY.

vii. Beda Ballard was born Abt 1784.

[This source knows of no proof of other sources' claim that Reuben BALLARD is a descendant of the John-Ralph-Abraham BALLARD family of Nansemond County, VA.]

      (2) The earliest record in which "our" Reuben BALLARD can be identified with certainty is a deed dated 26 April 1770 in which he is identified as then being of Bute County, NC. Bute County, NC was formed from Granville County, NC in 1764 and abolished in 1779 when it was divided into Warren and Franklin Counties, NC.

      (3) A Reuben BALLARD is listed in 1769 and 1770 tax lists in Craven County, NC, but it is doubtful whether he was the same person as the Reuben BALLARD who is identified as being of Bute County, NC as of 16 April 1770. See North Carolina, Compiled Census and Census Substitutes Index, 1790-1890 [database online], Provo, UT: Ancestry.com Operations Inc, 1999. [Although this source purports to cover only information from NC census and census substitutes from a 100-year period beginning in 1790, it also contains information relating to earlier NC tax lists.]

      (4) Bute County, NC was formed on 10 June 1764 from Granville County, NC. Granville County was formed on 28 June 1746 from Edgecombe County, NC. Edgecombe County was formed on 4 April 1741 from Bertie County, NC. Bertie County was formed on 2 August 1722 from Chowan County, NC.

      (5) Because Bute County, NC was formed from Granville County, NC in 1764, it may be helpful, in attempting to determine the ancestry of "our" Reuben BALLARD, to note the BALLARDs whose names appear in Granville County tax lists before 1764. The following information relating to those BALLARDs appears in North Carolina, Compiled Census and Census Substitutes Index, 1790-1890 [database online], Provo, UT: Ancestry.com Operations Inc, 1999:

1755 tax lists of Granville County, NC: Humphrey, John, Richard, Thomas and William BALLARD. [Note by compiler: Each of those BALLARDs would presumably have had to have been at least 16 years of age in order to appear in those tax lists; therefore, each of them was presumably born in or before 1739.]

The Humphrey, John, Richard, Thomas and William BALLARDs whose names appear in the 1755 tax lists in Granville County, NC are not necessarily the same persons as the Humphrey, John, Richard, Thomas and William BALLARDs, respectively, whose names later appear in records in Bute County, NC.

      (6) The following information relating to BALLARDs who names appear in records in Bute County, NC during the period from 1764 to 1779 is shown in Kerr, Mary Hinton, Warren County, North Carolina Records, Vol. II Supplement, Abstracts of Bute Co., NC Deeds Registered in Warren Co. Deed Books 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 & 7, 1766-1779, Warrenton, NC: Mary Hinton Kerr, 1967:

[Note by compiler: To get around the shortage of money, colonial governments printed paper money, and colonists used whatever foreign currency they could get their hands on - Spanish dollars, for example. Today, global trading in currency sets exchange rates, but there were no international banks to set exchange rates in the 1700s. Instead, each colony set an official value in pounds, shillings, and pence on paper money and foreign coin. Because their value was set by proclamation, these currencies were called "proclamation money." People could also simply barter or trade goods back and forth. But someone who wanted to buy a bushel of corn, for example, might not have anything the seller wanted in trade. To get around this problem, certain commodities like tobacco were used as a kind of currency. Everyone would take tobacco in exchange for other goods, because it could be easily sold again. Barter made accounting difficult, though. To manage a plantation or business, people needed to keep track of their sales, purchases, and debts. To make accounting possible, proclamation money also set a value on "rated commodities" that were commonly used as currency. These official prices meant that exchanges conducted in tobacco could be accounted in pounds, shillings, and pence. Turning commodities into "proclamation money" also enabled cash-poor colonists to pay their taxes in goods they had available to them.]

LIST OF GRANVILLE COUNTY MALITIA [sic], 1771. . . .

COMPANY COMMANDED BY CAPT. JONATHAN KITTRELL. . . .

      Reuben Ballard.

[The compiler does not know whether this Reuben BALLARD was the same person as "our" Reuben BALLARD.]

      (8) Dennis Nicklaus Genealogy (Mother's Side), a WorldConnect Family Tree:

      • Reuben [Ballard] can be concretely traced back as far as Apr. 1770 when he bought 150 acres of land in Bute Co., NC. (Bute Co., NC existed from 1764-1779 and was made into Warren and Franklin Cos.) Reuben and Apsilla Ballard sold the same land in Nov. 1770. The land was along Sandy Creek, from Lick Branch to Waters Spring Branch.

      • Reuben Ballard was in Franklin Co., GA as early as 1788. He owned 287.5 acres of land in Franklin Co., GA, which he bought Feb. 15, 1788 from Jonathon Parmer and sold back to Parmer in Jan. 1790, by which time Reuben was living in Wilkes Co., GA.

      • Reuben (also spelled Reubin) owned land in Wilkes Co. on the Fishing Creek waters. One key reference describes it as 343 Acres of 1st quality, oak and hickory lands. However, another compilation of 1790 tax returns describes it as 42.5 acres of 1st quality and 300 of second. Still a third compilation, apparently taken from the same records, says he owned 544 acres in Wilkes Co.

      • Other Ballard names on the 1790-92 tax lists for Wilkes Co. include a Nathan, John, and Philip all over 21 in 1792 but with no land, and a Humphry (or Humphrey) Ballard with 200 acres also on Fishing Creek. It is unknown if these are any relation to Reuben, but it seems likely. . . .

      • Reuben moved to Mercer Co., KY in 1795, along with his son-in-law Isaac Alexander.

      • On July 21, 1795, "Rubin Ballard'' of Mercer Co., KY, bought 140 acres of land in Mercer Co. from William and Dolly Crowders. He paid 150 pounds for the land which was on the "Doctors of Chaplins fork'' (Doctor's Fork of Chaplin's Creek) and was a rectangular plot 93 poles (north-south) by 240 poles (east-west).

      • Reuben came to Warren Co., KY in 1799, and that's where he remained until his death. He and his sons first settled along the Gasper River, near the Logan Co. border. In 1806 and 1807 the Ballards are listed as living on the Barren River, which is a little east of the Gasper River.

      • On Nov. 6, 1800, Reuben paid $333 for 100 acres of land on Blackberry Ponds in Warren Co. to Francis and Mary Jordan. Apparently this same land was assigned to Reuben by Francis Jordan before 1800, probably in 1799.

      • Reubin Ballard received a KY Land grant for 200 acres in Warren Co., KY, surveyed 20 Jul 1799. . . .

Will of Reuben Ballard, dated 8 Sep 1820, probated November Term 1820, Warren County, KY (Warren County, KY, Will Book B, 1820, p. 336):

Item - I having conveyed by deed to my son Bently Ballard one hundred and five acres of land, I consider it is his full share of my estate.

Item - Having given to my son William Ballard the sum of six hundred dollars to him in hand paid, and the balance in payment of his debts which I consider to be in full of his share of my property.
