IRA E. GILKINSON DIES IN DANVILLE HOSPITAL

Ira E. Gilkinson died in a hospital at Danville Monday evening at 9:30 o'clock from injuries received Friday night of last week at about 6:30 o'clock when the car in which he and his son and a grandson who was a youngster four years old, was struck by a freight train on the Walsh road at he crossing in Darrow.

The car was being chauffeured by his son, and both according to reports, were entirely oblivious of the approach of the train, which it is said, sounded no warning of any kind. They were almost upon the crossing before either of them noticed the train, which was running at a high rate of speed, consisting of the engine, five or six cars and a caboose. Young Gilkinson figured there was only one way to escape being ground to death and stepped on the gas, presumably thinking that he could clear the crossing. The rear of the auto was struck, however, and the occupants hurled in the air.

Mr. Gilkinson suffered injuries about the head several ribs were broken, and the spine injured. He was placed on the train which was headed South and taken to Danville, where he received the best of medical attention, all of which proved of no avail.
The youngster in the car was thrown through the windshield and received several nasty cuts on the head and neck some of which required a number of stitches. He was taken to his home and from late reports is getting along nicely.

The son who was at the wheel received only a few minor cuts and bruises none of which required the attention of a physician.

Mr. Gilkinson was section foreman of the Walsh road at Darrow and was well and favorably known in and around Sheldon. His untimely death is deeply regretted by a large host of friends.

Ira E. Gilkinson was born at Tangier, Park [sic] county, Ind., April 19, 1870, and died at a hospital in Danville August 8, 1921, having reached the age of 51 years, 3 months and 19 days.

He grew to manhood on a farm near the above mentioned town and in June, 1890 was united in marriage to Miss Sara Edith Williamson. To this union was born four children - Virgil E. of Springfield, Ill., Mrs. Daisy Orwig of Wyoming, Ill., Emmert E. of Sheldon and Pansy who is at home.

Deceased moved from Indiana to Scotland, Ill., in 1905, where he obtained employment on a railroad. He resided there for nine years, after which he removed to St. Anne, living at that place for five years. His last move was to Darrow, where he was employed by the Walsh Railroad Company as section foreman.

He leaves, besides immediate members of his family, one brother of Colleen, Ind., and three sisters - Mrs. Nancy Thompson of Tangier, Ind., Mrs. Alice Todd of Dana, Ind., and Mrs. Rena Stevens of Fitzgerald, Ga. His wife preceded him to the great home beyond, having passed away several years ago.

Mr. Gilkinson was a member of the I.O.O.F. lodge at Chrisman, Ill. He was a man of strong character and a kind and loving father. His home was his haven, as he was always deeply interested in the affairs of his children and in making them happy.

Funeral services were conducted at his late home in Darrow Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. E.F. Patton pastor of the Christian church of Sheldon officiating. Interment was made in Sheldon cemetery the I.O.O. F. burial ritual being used at the grave.
