      (4) Stackpole, Everett S., Old Kittery and Her Families, Lewiston, ME: Press of Lewiston Journal Company, 1903, pp. 429-431:

      FOST, FROST, FORST, FOSS.

In all of the several Frost families the name sometimes appears in court records and deeds as Fost. John Fost was in Dover in 1665 and was a juryman in 1667-9, 1671, and 1688. He married Mary, dau. of William Chadbourne, and she is mentioned in Humphrey Chadbourne's will, 1667. He may have married (2) Sarah Gosse 15 Aug. 1688.

John Fost, perhaps son of the above, made his will 17 Dec. 1699, which was probated 17 April 1700. It names wife Elizabeth and following children:

      WILLIAM b. 11 March 1673. See below.

MARY m. James Warren, Jr., about 1692.

HUMPHREY m. Catharine (_____). Widow Catharine Frost sold, 16 Nov. 1761, ten acres granted to her husband in 1734, in Somersworth, N. H. Tate says she d. in Dover, 14 March 1776.

      MARY.

      JEMIMA.

      ELIZABETH.

      SAMUEL, under age.

William Fost, named above, married Margery, dau. of Nathan Lord, about 1692. A William Foss married, 26 April 1703, Sarah, widow of Nathaniel Heard of Dover and had dau. Lydia born 7 Jan. 1705. A Lydia Fost married Peter Grant 24 Feb. 1717, and this is the only Lydia Fost I can find. She was then but a trifle over twelve years of age, yet such a marriage is not impossible. William Fost or Frost is mentioned in Dover (Rollinsford) in 1704, 1716 and 1732. Jan. 15, 1735, John Waldron of Dover, and Mary, his wife, Joseph Conner of Dover, and Sarah, his wife, James Richards of Dover, and Margery, his wife, and Benjamin Frost of Rochester, quit-claim to Benjamin Lord of Berwick all right to estate of Abraham Lord and William Lord of Berwick. York Deeds, XVIII. 185. June 9, 1737, William Frost of Portsmouth, mariner, made a similar quit-claim. The children, then, of William and Margery (Lord) Frost were:

WILLIAM m. Elizabeth Snell of Portsmouth, 1 June 1716. He is called "William ffoss formerly of Nichawannock, now of Portsmouth."

MARY m. John Waldron of Dover.

SARAH m. Joseph Conner of Dover.

MARGERY m. James Richards of Dover.

      BENJAMIN m. Ann Hodsdon.

William Frost bought forty acres of James Stackpole in what is now Rollinsford, in 1714, and sold the same to Benjamin Hoeg 2 Oct. 1721. This was perhaps the one who married Elizabeth Snell. He returned from Portsmouth to Dover and, 13 Dec. 1741, William and Elizabeth Frost, his wife, of Dover, sold to Giles Seward half of a house with small piece of land in Portsmouth. In these deeds the name is written fforst and Frost. The estate of William Frost of Dover [see footnote below] was appraised 29 June 1764, and William Frost was administrator. He is called Frost in the inventory and Foss in the administration.

It was, doubtless, the last named William Frost who married Mary, widow of Benjamin Hanson. June 18, 1739, William Forst and wife Mary sold to Amos Main land in Rochester, which was granted to William Forst, Benjamin Forst and Samuel Alley. Children:

      MARY b. 24 June 1728; m. Oct. 1751, Samuel Ricker of Somersworth?

      CHADBOURNE b. 26 March 1731.

      DANIEL bapt. 26 Aug. 1733.

      LYDIA bapt. 14 May 1738.

Benjamin Forst married in Newington, 2 Feb. 1735, Ann Hodgdon. Lived at Rochester, N. H. Will, 22 March 1775-20 June 1787. Children; all named in will:

      MARY bapt. 13 Jan. 1736.

      DANIEL bapt. 1 April 1740.

      JOHN bapt. 18 Sept. 1743.

      BENJAMIN bapt. 7 April 1745; m. Judith Whitehouse 19 Dec. 1780?

      SARAH bapt. 5 July 1747.

SUSAN bapt. 11 June 1749; born same day.

      LYDIA bapt. 9 Dec. 1750.

      SAMUEL.

      ELIZABETH.

      REBECCA.

      ABIGAIL.

[Footnote: The following were bapt. in Dover. Whether they were children of Humphrey and Catherine Forst or of William and Elizabeth (Snell) Frost is not determined. Humphrey bapt. 3 July 1720; Benjamin bapt. 31 July 1725; William bapt. 22 Aug. 1725; Margery and Lydia bapt .4 April 1725. The will of Philip Stackpole of Somersworth, 1761, names dau. Lydia Frost. The will of William Frost of Dover, 1780, names wife Elizabeth and ch. John, William, Samuel, Lydia and George, all under age. Nathaniel Frost, "formerly of Dover now of Durham, laborer," conveyed, 10 May 1735, to Samuel Chesley his right in commons of Dover, once belonging to Nicholas Brock. All these Forsts, Fosts and Frosts are given here, in order that they may not be confused with the Frost families of Eliot and Berwick. Some of the descendants now write their names Foss. I think the original name was Frost and was miscalled Fost and Forst, just as the Eliot name sometimes was.]
