      THOMAS JOHN HAMMOND (1697-1767)

Thomas Hammond who was later known as Thomas John Hammond, son of Colonel John Hammond and Anne Greenbury his wife, was born in St. Margaret's Westminster Parish, in January 1697[/8]. By the will of his father in 1742 he received the ancestral seat of "Mountain Neck" which had been resurveyed into "Hammond's Purchase".

On March 14, 1718/9, he declared himself as the son and heir of Anne who was the wife of John Hammond and the daughter of Colonel Nicholas Greenbury and deeded for £115 to Charles Hammond, Gent., "Town Neck" and "Middleborough" near the mouth of the Severn River then in the occupation of Charles Hammond. He furthermore declared that his father, John Hammond, had released him the land "before delivery" to the said Charles Hammond. No wife waived dower.

On June 21, 1721, according to the parish register, he married Anne Cockey who was born on December 4, 1704. Her father was Colonel Thomas Cockey, one of the early colorful characters of the county and certainly a planter with little or no conventions of the times. He was styled "Gent." and died testate in Anne Arundel, but by a codicil to his will, dated April 25, 1735, he bequeathed the children of his daughter, Anne Hammond, that is, Larrede, Elizabeth, John and Ann, personalty as they came of age, some of the property then being in the possession of their father, Thomas John Hammond. Madam Anne Hammond was the only acknowledged issue which Colonel Cockey named in his will, but he provided heavily and peculiarly for a number of children which bore the family name of Deye, with Cockey always as a middle name. All presumably were the children of Penelopy Deye who was seated on "Taylor's Hall" which was devised her until her son, Thomas Cockey Deye, attained the age of twenty-one. Penelopy was also to enjoy all legacies of her children until they reached majority.

On December 12, 1737, his mother-in-law, Elizabeth Cockey, declared herself as the Widow and Relict of Thomas Cockey and was entitled to one-third of the estate of her late husband, appointing her son-in-law, Robert Boone, her attorney to prosecute her claim. She therefore bequeathed a legacy of Anne Hammond, daughter to Thomas John Hammond and granddaughter of the said Elizabeth Cockey. Other legacies at the same time were bequeathed to Elizabeth Boone

      210

wife of Robert Boone her daughter and to James Moss and Richard Moss, planters, of Anne Arundel County, her sons. All legacies were for natural love and affections and for the "consideration of a decent and Comfortable life". . . .

Children of Thomas John and Ann (Cockey) Hammond

      1. Larrede Hammond, born June 2, 1722, married May 7, 1741, Henry, son of Henry and Sarah (Hopkins) Maynard.

      2. Elizabeth Hammond, born Aug. 17, 1725.

      3. John Hammond, born 1728, married Ann Gaither. . . .

      4. Ann Hammond, born 1730, married Wornol Worthington

He maintained his dwelling-plantation on "Hammond's Purchase", bordering the Severn. During his life time he remitted quit-rents on ''Hammond's Purchase", of 540 acres, "Timber Neck" of 363 acres, "Gosnell's Adventure" of 199 acres, and "Addition" of 22½ acres.

On October 16, 1762, for natural love and affections which he held for his son, John, he made a deed of gift of "Gosnell's Adventure", of 199 acres, on the south side of the Patapsco River and "Timber Neck", of 463 acres, on the south side of Rock Creek. No wife waived dower rights.

He died intestate. His personal estate was inventoried on April 3, 1767, by John Davidge and Nicholas Worthington, and appraised at £663/10/__, including 19 negroes. John Davidson Attorney for Mr Charles Wallace and Thomas Richardson & Co., approved as both kinsmen and creditors.

The personal estate of Thomas Hammond, late of Anne Arundel, distributed on October 3, 1777, by John Hammond, was certainly the estate of Thomas John Hammond, though the relationship of the heirs cannot be placed. The personal estate was valued at £663/10/__. The representatives were: John Hammond; James Nichols; John Hobbs; Caleb Floyd; Rebecca Maynard; Ann Rodwell; and Thomas Worthington. The administrator John Hammond made the following statement: ". . . that the foregoing named persons are all the Representatives now in being of the said Deceased to the best of his knowledge".
