UNPLACED MEMBERS OF THE FREDERICK STARNES I FAMILY . . .

Benjamin Starnes. Benjamin Starnes is shown in the 1820 census for Lincoln County, North Carolina, as being 45+ years of age.

[Note by compiler: Benjamin's surname is actually shown as STEARNS in the 1820 census. In addition, a household headed by John STEARNS is listed in the 1820 census of Lincoln County, NC.]

      (2) Starnes, H. Gerald & Starnes, Herman, Of Them That Left a Name Behind - A History of the Starnes Family, Baltimore, MD, Gateway Press, 1983, pp. 211-212:

Benjamin Starnes enlisted on February 1, 1814 for a term of six months in Captain Thomas Crawford's Company (also under Col. Jesse Pearson's command, General Graham's Brigade of North Carolina Militia) for service against the Creek Indians. Ben returned home at the end of July or first of August, 1814 with the victorious militia, but continued in service until his discharge on September 4, 1814 in Salisbury, Rowan County.

On February 20, 1818 or 1820 Benjamin married Mary Magdaline Lafeng, who was called "Polly," in Lincoln (now Catawba) County before Joseph Toranu, J.P. For his services, Ben's widow received an eighty-acre bounty land warrant some years after his death in March, 1829 in the county in which they were married. Ben and Polly had three or four children. She was born in 1794 and was still living in Catawba County in the spring of 1855.

      (4) A household headed by Benj. STEARNS is listed in the 1820 census of East of the South Fork of the Catawba River, Lincoln County, NC.

Listed in Benj.'s household are 1 free white male over 45 years of age; 1 free white female under 10 years of age; 1 free white female between 10 and 16 years of age; and 1 free white female between 16 and 26 years of age.

Assuming that Benj. is the free white male listed in the 1820 census as then being over 45 years of age, he would have been born before 1775, according to the 1820 census.

The information regarding the other persons in Benj.'s household in the 1820 census is insufficient to identify the relationship, if any, of those persons to him.

      (3) Catawba County, NC was formed from Lincoln County, NC on 12 December 1842.
