      (2) Obituary, The Walton Tribune, April 21, 1981:

State leader Maj. Gen. Hearn dies

      From staff reports

Retired Maj. Gen. George J. Hearn, 73, former adjutant general of Georgia, Georgia director of the Department of Defense, and mayor of Monroe, died April 17 in Walton County Hospital following a short illness.

Funeral services were held April 18 in the Monroe First Christian Church with the Rev. Michael Taylor officiating. Interment followed in Rest Haven Cemetery with military honors. Elders of the First Christian Church served as honorary escort.

Hearn, a Walton County native, was initially appointed adjutant general and state director of Civil Defense by former Gov. Herman E. Talmadge in June, 1954. He was subsequently reappointed by former governors Marvin Griffin, Ernest Vandiver, Carl E. Sanders and Lester G. Maddox.

In 1963, he became director of the newly created Office of Emergency Planning.

Hearn originally enlisted in the Georgia Army National Guard in 1925 and served in every enlisted grade until he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1932.

A veteran with 45 years service, Hearn served on active duty in World War II and during the Korean War. He was first inducted into the federal service as a captain in 1940 and left active federal service in 1946 as a colonel.

He was instrumental in assisting the post-war reorganization of the Georgia National Guard and was assigned as Executive Officer of the 108th AAA Brigade in early 1947.

He was serving in this capacity when he was called to active duty for the Korean conflict. In 1952, after almost two years of federal service, he returned to Georgia to take command of the Brigade with the rank of brigadier general. When he was appointed adjutant general in 1954, he held the rank of major general.

Hearn achieved national recognition for his accomplishments, serving on the General Staff Committee on National Guard and Reserve Policy. He was named to the Executive Council of the National Guard Association of the United States. In civilian life, Gen Hearn was past Georgia Department Commander of the American Legion and past Worshipful Master of Generous Warren Lodge No. 20, F&AM. He was an elder emeritus of the First Christian Church, former member of the Walton County Hospital Authority, member of the Monroe Water, Light and Gas Commission, the American Legion 40 & 8, VFW, Yaarab Shrine Temple, and Elks Club.

He was a director of the Georgia Central Bank and past president of the Monroe Golf and Country Club.
He was the son of George J. Hearn and Leona Brewer Hearn and husband of the former Nell Potts of
      Mansfield.

Survivors include his widow; one son, George J. Hearn III, Monroe, and grandchildren, Cheryl Hearn, Vickie Hearn, George J. (Buddy) Hearn IV, John Hearn and Jean Hearn, all of Monroe.
