A Round Hundred Gather in the Forest Shade.

"How small, of all that human hearts endure,
That part which laws of kings can cause or cure!
Still to ourselves in every place consigned,
Our own felicity we make or find.
With secret course, which no loud storms annoy,
Glides the smooth current of domestic joy."

In the winter of 1876, January 8, there was held in Vinton a reunion of the family of Mr. Joseph Young, it being the anniversary of his 86th birthday. Between sixty and seventy persons were present on that occasion. Two or three weeks ago the idea was conceived of having a grand family picni at which should he present not only the descendents of Mr. and Mrs. Young, but also the near relatives of Mrs. Young, whose maiden name was Gilchrist. Preparations were made, and Wednesday of last weak, a day as perfect and beautiful as could possibly be, witnessed the notable gather log at Powell's Grove, southeast of Vinton. Various means of amusement were provided, such as croquet, swinging, archery, etc. One little fellow in himself not quite equal to the fatigue and heat of the day.

Jos. Young was born in North Carolina, January 8, 1790; moved to what is now Indiana in 1808; was married to Nancy Gilchrist in 1816; came to Benton county in 1852. Mrs. Young died in Vinton, Nov. 11, 1872, at the age of 81 years. The following constitutes the family of Mr. and Mrs. Young in the order of their ages, with the number of children and grand children of each:

Mrs. J. S. TILFORD; children 3 - Mrs. Ann J. Hanford, John Y. Tilford and Mrs. Helena Tracy; grand-children 11.

      MRS. ELIZABETH A. CLINE; children 4 - Nancy J. Whipple, Martha A. Soden, Deliah A. Williams, Caroline J. Wilson; grand-children 14.

JAMES F. YOUNG; children 4 - Jas. G. Young. Clara M. Burnham, Carrie G. and James Wesley Young; grand-children 5.

ROBT. N. YOUNG; children 5 - Sarah B. Young, Mrs. Gitty Ellis, Lulie, Ethel F. and Mallle M. Young; grand-children 2.

      W. H. YOUNG; children 5 - Mrs. Ella M. Pike, Anna M., Charlie F., Jessie E. and Ida B. Young; grand-children 1.

MRS. NANCY M. FREEMAN; children 2 - Frank P. and Eddie C. Freman.

BETHUEL D. YOUNG; children 2 - Mrs. Wm. Slippy and Mrs. J. Wilson.

This gives the following figures: children of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Young, 7 - all living except Mrs. Cline - grandchildren living, 25; great- grandchildren living, 33. Of the children, there are now living in Vinton, Mrs. J. S. Tilford, J. F. Young, Robt. N. Young. W. H. Young, and Mrs. Nancy Freeman. Bethuel D. Young is living on a farm about eight miles from Vinton, in Jackson township. Nearly all of the grandchildren and great-grandchildren are in this immediate vicinity, and most of them were at the picnic on Wednesday last. With the number was also a slater of Father Young, Mrs. C. Van Cleve.

The Gilchrist family, of which Mrs. Nancy Young was a member, consisted of six children, originally from Kentucky to Indiana: viz, William, James, Nancy, Robert, Eli and John. The family of William Gilchrist is located in the vicinity of Terre Haute, Ind., and consists of eight children, about thirty grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren, swelling the whole number to about fifty.

The family of James Gilchrist consists of the following: William, James, John, Joseph, George, Robert, Charles, Mrs. Wheat, Mrs. Jameson and Mrs. Branaman. Of this branch there were present at the picnic, William, James, John and Joseph and their respective families. The three daughters of the family and two sons still reside in Indiana, and one son, Charles, resides in Missouri.
