      (2) Obituary, Union-Bulletin, Walla Walla, WA, October 18, 1949:

Eugene Lorton, Publisher, Dies in Tulsa Ending Long Career

TULSA, Okla. - Owner-publisher Eugene Lorton of the Tulsa Daily World, who established two newspapers in Washington state during his career, died Monday at the age of 80.

A forceful figure in Oklahoma journalism and politics for more than three decades, he had in his earlier life established the Walla Walla Bulletin (1906) and the Everett Tribune.

He had been ill for two weeks of a heart ailment with which he was seized soon after his return from a summer visit with Mrs. Lorton to California.

      Varied Career

His condition became critical last week.

Lorton owned and published The World since 1917.

His death brought to a close a colorful career that included stints as a telegraph operator, actor, politician, railroad worker, rancher and farmer as well as newspaperman.

Lorton came to Tulsa, then a lusty boom town of 18,000 from Walla Walla in 1911 as managing editor of The World, founded only six years before.

In 1913 he purchased part ownership of the paper and four years later acquired the entire property. His public life was linked with Tulsa and Oklahoma thereafter.

      Editor-Publisher

Until the early 1930's, Lorton was his paper's editor as well as publisher. The World's present editor, Norris G. Henthorne, assumed that post in 1922.

In recent years Lorton became less and less active in his paper's management and devoted considerable time to travel.

His love for newspapers first began as a printer's devil at Medicine Lodge, Kas., in the early 1880's. Before coming to Tulsa, he published the Salurbria, Idaho, Citizen after leasing its plant for $1 a month; founded the Emmett, Idaho, Index; obtained an interest in the Boise, Idaho, Sentinel; printed the Lyon County Republican at Mound City, Kas., and established both the Everett, Wash., Tribune and the Walla Walla Bulletin.

      Daughters Here

He is survived by his wife, Maude, an associate editor of The World; four daughters, Mrs. Kenneth D. Campbell, Santa Monica, Calif., Mrs. Mildred Koepke and Mrs. Ralph Glafke of Walla Walla, and Mrs. Edward Chabot, Seattle; eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

One grandson is the son of Lorton's only son who died in 1938 as the result of injuries suffered in a swimming accident several years before. The son was by his second marriage.

The publisher's former wife, Mrs. Sara M. Lorton, lives in Walla Walla. One daughter, Mrs. Koepke, left Walla Walla by plane Monday for Tulsa. Another daughter, Mrs. Edward (Edna) Chabot of Seattle, went to Tulsa several days ago.
