    • (1) Steelman, Sanford, The Starnes Family Four Generation Project <http://web.archive.org/web/20011224030918/http://www.trellis.net/steel/sta/fourgen.htm>:

Jacob Starnes (born ca 1775, died ca 1845) married Esther Wence (born ca 1778, died after 1850) on April 20, 1798. Their children:

      a. Rachel Starnes (born July 31, 1798).

      b. Valentine Starnes (born ca 1800) married Olleary (Elizabeth) Ritch (born ca 1802) on August 17, 1824 at Morningstar Lutheran Church, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.

NOTE: There is no direct proof that Valentine Starnes was the son of Jacob Starnes. However, Esther Wence had a brother named Valentine, and the 1850 census records show that this Valentine Starnes had a daughter named Esther.

      c. Frederick Starnes married Sally _____. . . .

NOTE: There is a census entry for 1790 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina for "Widow Starnes", showing three males and three females. One female would be Katherine Starnes, widow of Joseph Starnes. One male would be Joseph Starnes, Jr. Mary, Barbara, and the wife of Michael Moyer? would have already left the household. This would leave 4 children unaccounted for. In her manuscript Our Starnes Family, Descendants of Joseph Starnes, Sr. and Others who Resided in Caldwell County, North Carolina, Frances Starnes Lesley lists the following children of Joseph Starnes: Joseph, Jr., Catherine, Peter, Mary, Nicholas, Frederick, Isaac, and Leonard. I have no information that would link Peter, Isaac, or Leonard to the Joseph Starnes, Sr. line. In an article by Sherman and Minnie Belle Starnes in the Caldwell County Heritage it is stated that the children of Joseph Starnes were Joseph, Jr., Mary, Frederick, Isaac, Leonard and others. It appears that the information in this article may have come from some work done by Mamie M. Bisanar contains the same erroneous information linking Joseph to the English Starnes family, i.e. Nathaniel and Shubel that appears in other material that I have found from Dr. Bisanar. The reference to Frederick being the son of Joseph states that he was married to Mary Goldman, which is clearly incorrect. If a Frederick Starnes did in fact marry Mary Goldman, then it was Frederick I, not a son of Joseph who was a son of Frederick I.

      (2) Starnes, H. Gerald & Starnes, Herman, Of Them That Left a Name Behind - A History of the Starnes Family, Baltimore, MD, Gateway Press, 1983, p. 211:

Jacob Starnes had married Esther Wentz in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina in April, 1798 and settled in Union County around 1800. At this time they had one child. On March 14, 1814 he was drafted into service in Capt. Robert Wood's Eighth Company of seventy-one North Carolina Militia detached from the Second Mecklenburg Regiment. Mecklenberg provided five militia companies for the War of 1812. Col. Jesse A. Pearson commanded the detached companies.

Pvt. Jacob Starnes became quite ill while in service at Fort Hawkins and was unable to travel when the troops marched out to reinforce Gen. Jackson's forces in the Mississippi Territory (now Alabama). Robert Boyd remained with Jacob to care for him during his illness. The troops returned in late July or early August, but several weeks passed before the ailing Jacob returned home to his wife and their four or five children.

Esther (or Easter?) and Jacob Starnes raised eight children, the last born in 1825. Jacob died in Union County, North Carolina on January 20, 1848; he was in his seventies at the time. His widow continued to live in the same county.

      Jacob Starnes
      Birth: 1775, Virginia, USA
Death: 29 Jan 1848 (aged 72-73), Union County, North Carolina, USA
Burial: Morning Star Lutheran Cemetery, Matthews, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, USA

Jacob Starns (also spelled Stearns and Starnes) was a son of Joseph Starns (c.1730-1779) and his wife Katherine, possibly Carlock/Gerlach. His father was killed on the Kentucky frontier in 1779, and his mother settled on lands he owned in what was then Mecklenburg (now Union) County, NC around 1784.

Jacob married Esther Wentz (c.1778-1852) in Mecklenburg County, NC in April 1798. She was a daughter of John Andrew and Catherine Wentz. Jacob served in the War of 1812. He and Esther had eight children.

Jacob and Esther were active members of the Morning Star Lutheran Church, her parents had helped to found in the 1770s. I do not know that Jacob and Esther are buried at Morning Star Church, but think it's highly likely.

The children of Jacob Starns and Esther Wentz were (as best I can figure):

      1. Rachel Starns (1798/9-aft. 1850) was in her mother's household in 1850. No further information.

      2. Valentine A. (probably Adam) Starns/Stearns (c.1800-3 June 1875) m. Olivia "Livy" Ritch in 1824, m. Margaret T. Query in 1870. Children: Adam, John Leander, Esther, Dulin, Margaret Jane, Jacob M. and Brown Stearns. All the sons but Adam were killed in the War.

      3. Catherine Starns (c. 1802/10) was in her mother's household in 1850. She was head of a household with her brother Joseph W. in 1860. No information after that.

      4. Andrew Starns/Starnes (1804-1899), married twice, I believe, first to a lady whose name I don't know, then to Eliza Hemby (1823-1889) in 1840. There were 13 children of the second marriage, and at least 1 of the first. Two sons killed in the War.

      5. Mary E. (probably Elizabeth) Starns (1813-1896) m. Eli Hemby (1814/5-1890) in 1835. No children that survived.

      6. Margaret Starns (c. 1815-?) was in her mother's household in 1850. No further information.

      7. Lydia Starns (c. 1824-?) m. Wylie Conder Z(1831-1863) in 1851. Apparently she died sometime before 1860. One son: Marcus Efird "Mark" Conder (1853-1937).

      8. Joseph W. Starns (c. 1826-1862), was in his mother's household in 1850, living with his sister Catherine in 1860. Enlisted Co. C, 10th Batt'n. NC Heavy Artillery Reg't., "The Munroe Heavy Artillery," of the Confederate States Army on 19 March 1862. He became ill with typhoid fever while serving in the army at Wilmington. He came home where he died on 28 Oct. 1862.
