STARNES BLUFF AND STARNES BEND II

About 1797 Peter, John and George Starnes, grandsons of Frederic and Mary Goldman Starns, left Greene Co. TN and moved back to southwest VA. They bought adjacent tracts of land some six miles north of present day Gate City on the south side of Copper Ridge. These tracts were located near springs by the big elm. This area became part of Scott Co. in 1814. In 1829 George Starnes bought tracts of land on the north side of Ridge near the Clinch River. In 1831 Joseph and In 1834 Frederic, two of Peter's sons, bought tracts of land on the north side adjacent to George. These were the first of several purchases by the Starnes' which eventually led to these areas being called "Starnes Bluff & Starnes Bend."

Frederic Starnes, for whom the "Bluff" was named, was married to Elizabeth Snider. To this union were born five children: William K. Starnes, Malinda Starnes Lark, Malissa Starnes Stewart, Katherine Starnes Hill and Johnson W. Starnes. The Frederic Starnes house still stands. He and many of his descendants are buried in the nearby cemetery. Starnes Bluff community church, which also served as the school, still stands on his land.

Joseph Starnes, who bought tracts of land just west of Frederic, married Sallie Thornberry. To this union were born two sons: William W. Starnes and Hiram K. Starnes. Although Joseph's house is gone, he and many of his descendants rest in the old cemetery located near where he lived. His sons purchased large tracts of land on each side of the big bend in the Clinch River and from this the area became known as "Starnes Bend."

      (3) Starnes, H. Gerald & Starnes, Herman, Of Them That Left a Name Behind - A History of the Starnes Family, Baltimore, MD, Gateway Press, 1983:

[Note by compiler: Much of the information in this source relating to Peter Starnes, Sr. also relates to George Starnes. See the Notes in this database relating to Peter Starnes, Sr.]

      pp. 200-201:

Peter Starns, son of Thomas, who lived on Lick Run (a branch of Carlock's Creek in Washington, now Smyth County) was a veteran of the Battle of King's Mountain. John was said to be Peter's brother and had served as lieutenant of militia in Washington County at the end of the Revolutionary War in 1782. George was the younger of this trio from whom all the southwest Virginia branch of the family descends. He was about twenty-eight years old when he moved back into Virginia. He was born ca. 1771 on the Holston shortly after the family permanently settled there in 1769 from the New River area.

Southwest Virginia family tradition is that George was also Peter's brother. This could well have been the case since they were very, very closely related and bought up adjacent tracts of land. They chose to settle on the "waters of Copper Creek," some six miles back or north of Estellville.

      p. 235:

There were no legitimate heirs of George Starnes, Sr. [Note by compiler: George Starnes, Sr. did have legitimate heirs by his first wife, Kezia Davis.] His [second] wife, Jenny Bruckner Starnes, bore him no children. George fathered Jane Guthrie's son who was called George Eakin Starnes. Frederick Starnes raised this boy during his early years. After the death of his wife, George either married Jane or had a common-law marriage with her until she was legally regarded as his spouse.

The Starnes seem to have had a particular interest in bringing up the boy, George E., as one of their own. George and Jane got themselves appointed guardian of their son. George had also bought a place for Jane, who had another son named David McHenry.

In 1835 Jane gave some of her personal property to David McHenry but retained the house and property for the benefit of her other son, George E. Starnes. She and George then sold same to P.H. West.

      p. 665:

George Starnes married Kezia Davis in 1800. Their issue were: Margaret Starnes Williams, John Starns, Betsy Starnes Wyrick and Thomas Starnes.
