Leathers, 1994, pp. 376-377: Joseph Wise, along with his wife Margaret and their four children, loaded their possessions into their carts and left Wayne County, North Carolina - heading towards Georgia to make their home on the edge of the wilderness. On October 10, 1774, Joseph received 100 acres of land on Long Creek in the fertile uplands of Wilkes County; where they lived on a large plantation near the village of Dartmouth, GA; later called Petersburg. The original home is still standing and by the road was an old mulberry tree on which Joseph raised silk worms and shipped them to England. (5) Oglethorpe County, GA Will Book A, pp. 144-145: JOSEPH WISE of Oglethorpe Co - poorly in body - To my son PATTON WISE 230 acres of land where he now lives, already deeded to him. To my son JACOB WISE 140 acres already deeded to him. To my son JOHN WISE 202 acres already deeded to him. To my son JOEL WISE 240 acres already deeded to him. To sons JOEL & JACOB 176 acres which I deeded to my son BARNEY WISE which he sold the said JOEL & JACOB WISE & requested I make over to them by deed. To my daughter SUSEY MARTIN 100 acres of land already deeded her. To my wife MARGARET WISE the rest of my estate during her natural life, and at her death the plantation be given to SHERWOOD WISE. All the remaining of my estate to be equally divided among my remaining children SELAH JONES, OBEDIENCE ARTHER, SALLEY WISE, ANNY WISE, & PEGGY WISE, and if my son SHERWOOD WISE should die, the property to be divided among the last five mentioned.
