    • (1) Excerpts from James County - A Lost County of Tennessee:

      After Mr. Rutherford's death, James County constructed a two-room building which was the first school in the community built with public funds. The first principal was Benjamin H. Gross assisted by Miss Annie Holman, both having previously attended the Rutherford School. They were followed by K. K. Newport as principal. James County later added more rooms to the original building before its demise in 1919.

      Gross, a World War I veteran wounded in action, later studied at the Sorbonne in Paris. His devoted teaching career was primarily in the Birchwood area; his son, Dr. Benjamin H. Gross, Jr., a Guerry Professor at the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga, followed in his father's footsteps.

      Awarded for actions during the World War I

      By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), Sergeant Benjamin F. Gross (ASN: 553722), United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. Sergeant Gross distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Company B, 8th Machine-Gun Battalion, American Expeditionary Forces, in action during the Second Battle of the Marne, 1 June to 27 July 1918, conducting a reconnaissance previous to the advance of a platoon.

      (6) Obituary from The Chattanooga Times, August 2, 1948:

      Benjamin Harrison Gross, retired Hamilton County schoolteacher and veteran of World War I, died late Saturday night [July 31, 1948] at his home in Birchwood. He was 58.

      A native of Birchwood, Mr. Gross was the son of the late J. H. and Nancy Earhart Gross. He attended the Rutherford Academy in Birchwood, Tennessee State Teachers' College at Johnson City and the University of Chattanooga. He spent a year in special study at the University of Clermont in France following World War I. He was one of the first three men to enter the war from James County.

      His teaching career in county schools spanned 33 years at Salem, Gold Point, New Union and Birchwood schools. He retired after this 18th year at the Birchwood School. A leader in civic and religious work, he was a member of the Birchwood Baptist Church, where he taught the men's class.

      Funeral services will be held from the Birchwood Baptist Church this afternoon at 3 o'clock. Active pallbearers will be members of the Young Men's Sunday School Class and honorary pallbearers are officers of the church and members of the Birchwood School faculty.

      Mr. Gross is survived by his wife, Mrs. Jessie Brown Gross; two sons, Benjamin H. Gross Jr., and Harry Lee Gross; sisters, Mrs. Ida Starnes, Norman, Okla.; Mrs. Lou Ann Starnes, Caitus [sic], Okla.; Mrs. Estie Halcomb, Sand Mountain, Ala.; a brother, James Gross, Harrison; and several nieces and nephews.
