PHEBE MISER I . . . , daughter of John Miser . . . and Elizabeth Hale was born April 27, 1800 in Blount County, Tennessee. She attended a community subscription school and being an excellent student, was asked to teach in the Fall of 1817. Here she met and married _____ Brown.

      CHILDREN:

[i] John H. Brown, born Nov. 14, 1818; died Nov. 22, 1837; no record of marriage.

Phebe married John Buttram in Bledsoe County, Tennessee in 1821. He was born June 1, 1803 in Rowan County, North Carolina, son of Levi Butram (born 1777 in Rowan County, North Carolina) and Elizabeth "Eliza" Bedwell (born ca. 1779 in Rowan County, North Carolina). John Buttram's grandparents were William and Margaret Buttram. It is believed that William Buttram was born in Pennsylvania ca. 1735 and married Margaret prior to their leaving Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

Quoting in part from his obituary published in the "Southwestern Christian Advocate", Nashville, Tennessee, Saturday, September 11, 1841, "John Buttram in the year 1823 professed religion and joined the Methodist Episcopal Church; and on the 5th of October 1830 was licensed to exhort on Sequachy Circuit (Bledsoe County, Tennessee). He removed to Rhea County, Tennessee (now Meigs), February 15, 1831; and on the 25th of July, 1836, was licensed to preach by the quarterly conference for Sweet-water Circuit, Holston conference. As a preacher he was generally respected.

"He had, for some years previous to his death, manifested symptoms of a chronic illness. "I frequently visited him, in the time of his affliction, and every time heard him say something relative to his trust in God, and his prospects of a happy immortality. I took leave of him and he died May 24, 1841." Written by James Moore.

It is assumed that Phebe Miser Buttram kept her children together on a tract of land on the East side of Sewah (now Sewee) Creek, Meigs County Tennessee near land owned by Rev. James Moore, close friend and co-worker of John Buttram. A granddaughter of Phebe Miser Buttram . . . , Phebe Buttram Pitts of Pea Ridge, Arkansas gives us some insight as to the early years of her father and brothers:

"John and Phebe Miser Buttram's children were young when their parents died (Phebe died August 16, 1844). Phebe Buttram . . . was sixteen years old in 1844 and with the assistance of her brother George W. . . and the beloved and faithful Granny Nickels, reared the younger children to adulthood. Elijah . . . was told by his sister Phebe . . . to run an errand for her. Since he had a stone bruise on his heel, he felt he was unable to go. Waiting a little while, she mentioned sending him to one of the neighbors. 'Lige' jumped up as fast as he could, cracked his heels together and was ready to go. Phebe picked up a switch and then sent him on the first errand she had requested.

"Phebe 6/5 sent 'Lige' in early winter to round up the sheep and bring them nearer the barn. Elijah was so cold and tired that he sat down on a stump to rest Everytime he dozed off an old ram would butt and awaken him, probably saving 'Lige's' life.["]
