      MAXWELL . . .

      1 ALEXANDER, farmer, York, bot from Thos. Moulton 23 Jan. 1657-8, and was the first Scot to buy and settin what became 'Scotland.' Previously, as Mr. Geo. Leader's servant, he had been in ct. for abusing his master and mistress. Kit. gr. 1656, York gr. 1659, 1668-9. Tr.j. 1668, 1676, 1688; gr.j. 1679, 1687, 1691; tav. lic. 1683-5, 1687. O. A. 22 Mar. 1679-80. On June 27, 1707 he sold to John McIntire 3 a. bounded S.E. 'by the orchard or garden of sd. Maxell where the Garison now stands.' This garrison the historian of York consid. to be the same, enlarged and improved, kn. later and now as 'the McIntire garrison.' See Y. D. 7: 87, and Hist. of York ii: 223-4. Lists 298, 25, 33, 87. See also his serv. Saml. Crawley (1), Dill(1), Fox(6), Grant(5), Kelly(11), Mackaneer. He m. bef. 4 Sept. 1671 Agnes Frost(6), who was liv. 23 Aug. 1704; both were abs. from meeting in 1696. He m. 2d (by Capt. Preble in 1707) Sarah Pennewell (see 3). His will, 15 May - 8 Oct. 1707, gives her all for life, afterw. ½ the land and marsh to Mr. Moody, ½ for use of the church. No desc.
