      (2) History of Bartholomew County, Indiana, Chicago, IL: Brant & Fuller, 1888, pp. 655-656:

WILLIAM R. LEMAR, a prosperous farmer and representative citizen of Clifty Township, was born in Franklin County, Ind., September, 1818, and is the third son of Richard and Mary (Williams) Lemar. The father was a native of Maryland and an early settler of Indiana, moving to what is now Franklin County prior to the organization of the State. He died at Blooming Grove, when the subject of this sketch was but four years of age. William R. was raised in Franklin County, and, owing to the death of his father, was early in life bound apprentice to learn the stone mason's trade. He soon acquired a thorough knowledge of the trade, but was compelled to work a part of the time upon the farm, the man to whom he was bound having proved himself a hard taskmaster. He served his time faithfully, and, on attaining his majority, went to Iowa, in which State he followed agricultural pursuits for two years. Subsequently, he engaged as engineer on one of the large steamers plying the Mississippi, and for several years followed the river service on the Mississippi, Ohio, and other streams, meeting with a variety of experiences in the meantime. On quitting the river, he came to Bartholomew County, Ind., where, on the 27th of January, 1845, he was united in marriage with Miss Louisa Davis, daughter of Jesse and Rhewhanna Davis, of South Carolina. After his marriage, Mr. Lemar began farming a short distance southwest of Newbern, and later removed to Newbern, where his wife died shortly afterward, leaving three children, viz.: John R., Elizabeth, and Mary. December 29, 1859, Mr. Lemar married his second wife, Anna M. Smith, of York County, Penn., daughter of Andrew and Pollie (Miller) Smith. This union was blessed with three children, viz.: Edward S., Anna, and Charles D. Mr. Lemar is one of the public-spirited citizens of Clifty. He was constable of the township nine years, and at one time held the position of deputy sheriff of Bartholomew County under Richard Carter. Politically, he supports the Democratic party, and in religion belongs to the Christian Church, as does also his wife.
