THOMAS WELLES . . . , born at Glastonbury, Conn., 14 Feb. 1692, died there 14 May 1767, in 75th year (gravestone); married first, at Hartford, Conn., 28 Dec. 1715, MARTHA PITKIN, born at Hartford, 28 Feb. 1692, died at Glastonbury, 3 or 4 July 1763, in 72d year, daughter of Chief-Justice William and Elizabeth (Stanley) Pitkin; married second, at Bolton, Conn., 15 Aug. 1764, MARTHA (HUNT) WHITE, born at Northampton, Mass., 18 Apr. 1699, died at Somers, 17 Feb. 1784, widow of Rev. Thomas White, and daughter of Jonathan and Martha (Williams) Hunt.

      He was a very distinguished citizen of Glastonbury. In May 1724 he was confirmed Captain of the Glastonbury company, and in Oct. 1739 he was chosen Colonel of the 6th Regiment. He was Commissary for Conn. troops in the French Wars, Feb. 1745 to May 1746, and in March 1755; and was on the Connecticut-Massachusetts Boundary Commission, 1739. He served as Deputy for Glastonbury in the Connecticut Assembly, May 1725, Oct. 1726, May and July 1728, May I730, May and Oct. 1731, May and Oct. 1732, Feb., May and Oct. 1733, May and Oct. 1734, May and Oct. 1735, May and Oct. 1736, May and Oct. 1737, May and Oct. 1738, May and Oct. 1739, May, July, Oct. and Nov. 1740, May and Oct. 1741, May and Oct. 1742, May and Oct. 1743, May and Oct. 1744, Feb., Mar., May, July, Aug. and Oct. 1745, May, June and Oct. 1746, Jan., May and Oct. 1747, May and Oct. 1748, May and Oct. 1749, May, Oct. and Nov. 1750, and May 1751, being chosen Speaker of the House at all the sessions from Oct. 1746 to May 1751; and was elected an Assistant of the Colony, 1751 to 1760 inclusive. He was one of the Auditors of Colony accounts, 1728, 1730, 1736, 1737, 1740, 1742, 1743, 1744, 1747, 1749, 1750, 1751, 1752, and 1754; and a Surveyor, 1732. He was a Justice of the Peace, 1730 to 1751 inclusive; and Assistant Judge of the Hartford County Court, 1752. He served Glastonbury as Town Clerk from 1730 to 1766.

      The will of Thomas Welles, Esq., dated /4 Mar. 1766, proved 20 May 1767, gave to wife, Martha, £25 and a mourning suit; to daughters, Ruth, Elizabeth, Sarah and Mary, in addition to what they have had; grandchildren, Hannah, John, George, Jerusha, Isaac and Ashbel Welles; to sons, William and Jonathan Welles, the residue, they to be executors, they having had most of the realty by deeds. Witnesses: John Eells, Gideon Hale, Israel Loveland.

      i. RUTH, b. 4 Apr. 1717; d. at Glastonbury, 5 Sept. 1787 in 71st yr. (g. s.); m. at Glastonbury, 3 Jan. 1738/9, Capt. ISAAC MOSELEY, b. abt. 1712, d. at Glastonbury, 11 July 1773 in 61st yr. (g. s.), son of Capt. Joseph and Abigail (Root) Moseley. He was confirmed Ensign of the 5th Co., 6th Regt., May 1754, through error, which was rectified Oct. 1754, and he was then assigned to the 4th Co , 6th Regt. In Aug. 1755, he was commissioned First Lieutenant of the 1st Co.. 3d Regt. (Col. Samuel Talcott), raised to go against Crown Point. In Oct. 1768 he became Captain of the 4th Co., 6th Regt., his old company. . . .
