      Martha Samantha "Mattie" Starnes was the daughter of Henry Starnes and Narcissus "Nettie" Johns. Mattie was born 31 Jul 1869 in Tennessee (probably in Birchwood).

      Mattie was from Birchwood, Tennessee, across the river from Sale Creek, Tennessee.

      She was a teacher.

      She was the 3rd wife of Dr. Columbus Edward Downey. They were married on 19 Dec 1901 in Sale Creek, Tennessee. She instantly became the step-mother for the six children who were still living at home, "Otis" Marshall Downey age 22, "Lewis" Jackson Downey age 19, Thomas Edward "Ed" Downey age 16, Columbus "Addison" Downey age 15, Nancy Catherine "Kitty" Downey age 12, and "Mary" Jane Downey age 10. Two of the other children "John" Milton Downey and "Florence" Victoria Downey had already left home. Mattie and Columbus did not have any children together.

      Her husband Columbus died 9 Oct 1906, from a hemorrhage caused when he was kicked by a horse that he was shoeing.

      Granny Downey as she was called would live with the Downey children and their families until her death on 29 Apr 1934.

      In 1909 she helped her step-daughter Nancy Catherine "Kitty" Downey plan her wedding which took place on Christmas Day of 1909 at the Downey home.

      In 1910 she was lived with her step-children Thomas Edward "Ed" Downey, Columbus "Addison" Downey and "Mary" Jane Downey.

      In 1920 she lived with Columbus "Addison" Downey, his wife "Burleigh" Mae Eldridge Downey and their two children "Donald" Eldrige Downey and "Margaret" M Downey.

      In 1930 she lived with her step-daughter Mary Jane Downey Kenny, her husband John "Jack" Hubbard Kenney and their children "Eunice" Margarett Kenney and Hubbard "Downey" Kenney.
