Young 'Whizzer' Is Going Home After Long Year in Hospital

After a year in the hospital, "Whizzer" is going home.

"Whizzer" is 4-year-old Lee Michael Lewis, as bright, clever and pert a child as you could ever see. But for a year he has suffered sleeping sickness and in January it looked as if it might be the end for "Whizzer."

He had been fed by tube for six months - and even then he couldn't keep his food down. He was kept alive by injections of glucose.

The doctors decided to try artificial fever treatments - which had proved effective in some types of illness but have not been used for encephalitis.

      Popular With Nurses

About a month and a half ago "Whizzer" started getting better. He has become the pet of the hospital and the favorite beau of most of the nurses.

When the photographer went to get his picture there was some difficulty about finding him. A little sleuthing revealed that a group of nurses had taken him to the corner drug-store for ice cream.

When he was told to eat his ice cream for the cameraman, he replied he'd rather have his termperature taken.

      His Ears Are His Eyes

After the picture was snapped he was asked what that sound and flash was. Whizzer guessed a cigar or cigaret. He's blind, you see, and whether his eye-sight can be restored remains a big question.

But his hearing is acute and he can distinguish between a truck, ambulance or car passing in the street, just by the sound of the motor.

"Whizzer" is a bright child. And now he's going home with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Michael Lewis, 728 Northeast Fifteenth Street.

Whizzer Gets a Break, But Not a Good One

"Whizzer" is home again, and this time he intends to stay there awhile. Released last Friday from Wesley hospital after a year's bout with sleeping sickness, "Whizzer" was enchanted with the new toys he found at home waiting for him.

On the day after he got home, he reached too far toward a table on which the toys were lying beside his bed. The table slipped and "Whizzer" fell, breaking his leg in a simple fracture above the knee.

"Whizzer" went back to the hospital, where he's a favorite with the nurses. After a two-day bout with X-rays and the placing of a cast up to his waist he was allowed to return to his home at 728 Northeast Fifteenth street where he lives with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harold M. Lewis.

Now, wearing his long cast, he is wheeled into the sunshine each day wearing dark glasses. For the four-year-old boy was blind after his year's illness and the sensitivity of his eyes to light has not been determined.

After three weeks the cast probably can be removed, Mrs. Lewis said. Meanwhile "Whizzer" is being given an extra calcium diet to give strength to his bones.

One of these days he intends to get out of that cast and that wheel chair.
