      Hugh Wardlaw, 1740-1802

      Second of the three brothers coming to our area was Hugh Wardlaw who married first Elizabeth Coalter (sometimes spelled Coulter) in 1763 in Virginia, married second Mrs. Mary Miller Logan, no children. He was a captain in the Revolution, was on the committee of three men to select the site for the new Abbeville County courthouse, was Abbeville County judge, 1797-1800, and an elder in Greenville Presbyterian Church. Hugh and Elizabeth Coalter Wardlaw had 12 children, three died young, others were:

      [i] William Wardlaw, 1764-1839, Revolutionary soldier, married first Margaret Hall, six children. William Wardlaw removed to Harris County, Ga., married second Margaret McCully, 12 children.

      [ii] James Wardlaw, 1767-1842, lived in Abbeville and about 1796 became deputy clerk of court. He was elected clerk of court in 1800 and continued in office for nearly 40 years. A great-grandson, Capt. John L. (Jack) Perrin was Abbeville clerk of court for 48 years, beginning in 1900. James Wardlaw married Hannah Clarke, 1778-1825, in 1796, 12 children, four of whom died young, others were (1) David Lewis Wardlaw, 1799-1873, first white child born in Abbeville, became a judge, married Sarah Rebecca Allen, 10 children; (2) Francis Hugh Wardlaw, 1800-1861, also a judge and chancellor, married Ann Gresham Lamar, seven children; (3) Elizabeth Amanda Wardlaw, 1805-1854, married first Simeon E. Bonham, removed to Alabama; married second the Rev. Abiezer C. Ramsey, Methodist minister; 14 children, seven by each marriage; (4) Robert Henry Wardlaw, 1807-1887, married Eliza Bowie, 13 children; (5) Jane Eliza Wardlaw, 1811-1881, married Thomas Chiles Perrin; (6) Joseph James Wardlaw, 1814-1873, a physician, married Mary Ann Witherspoon, 10 children; (7) William Alfred Wardlaw, 1816-1876, married lwanona (Ivy) Tillman, seven sons, four of whom died young, one killed in Confederate War and the other two did not marry; (8) Hannah Margaret Wardlaw, 1821-1879, married Lewis J. Patterson, no children.

      [iii] John Wardlaw, 1770-1848, married a first cousin Mary Wardlaw, daughter of John, removed to Pontotoc, Miss., eight children.

      [iv] David Wardlaw, 1771-1840, elected sheriff of Abbeville County in 1799, later removed to Wilcox County, Ala., never married.

      [v] Margaret Wardlaw, 1773-1853, married a cousin James Wardlaw, son of John Wardlaw.

      [vi] Joseph Wardlaw, 1776-1852, lived near New Market and became quite wealthy. He married Frances Jane Waller, daughter of the Rev. John Waller. The following list of their children may not be complete: (1) Hugh Waller Wardlaw married a cousin Elizabeth Waller, no children; (2) Eliza Ann Wardlaw married Leroy Watson; (3) Harriet Wardlaw married Thomas Whitlock, Greenwood merchant; removed to Florida in 1846, eight children; (4) Joseph Newton Wardlaw, unmarried; (5) Benjamin Franklin Wardlaw married first Mary Livingston, married second her sister, no children; (6 and 7) Amanda Frances and Dorothy Wardlaw.

      [vii] Robert Wardlaw, 1778-1812, married Lucy Hodges, daughter of Major John Hodges, two children: (1) Hugh Marshall Wardlaw married Eliza Robertson, no children; and (2) Elizabeth Ann Wardlaw, married David Robert Caldwell.

      [viii] Jane Wardlaw, 1781-1825, married Jesse Calvert.

      [ix] Hugh Hutson Wardlaw, born 1785, married _____ Burton, daughter of John Burton of the Long Cane Creek section, one child: Mary Ann Wardlaw married Benjamin A. Hodges, son of Major John Hodges.
