Christopher CAMPBELL was apparently a rather prominent citizen in Rochester, IN in the mid to late 1800s. Two county histories include biographies of him and his family.
The following information is contained in Peattie, Elia W., "History of Fulton County," in The Pictorial Story of America, Chicago, IL: National Publishing Co., 1896, pp. 52-53:
CHRISTOPHER CAMPBELL, of Aubbeenaubbee township, was born in Baltimore, Md., May 20, 1831. His parents were John and Clara (Barcher) CAMPBELL. The father [John CAMPBELL] was born in SCOTLAND in 1797, and died in White county, ILL., when nearly ninety years of age. He came to America when eighteen years of age. . . . In Baltimore John Campbell married Clara Barcher, who was born in Amsterdam, HOLLAND, in 1809. She died in White county, ILL., at the age of seventy-seven years. After the marriage of John and Clara Campbell they removed to Sandusky county, OHIO, where they lived nineteen years, and then (1853) came to Fulton county and settled in Aubbeenaubbee township, where they lived about six years. They then moved to southern ILLINOIS, where the remainder of their days was spent. They were members of the Presbyterian church, and pioneers of sterling qualities. They had the following children: Daniel, deceased; Christopher, Angus, John, Edward, deceased; Clara, Jeanette, Nancy, deceased; Sarah and Isabella. The subject of this personal mention [Christopher CAMPBELL] is the only one of the family now residing in Fulton county. He was about five years of age when his parents went to OHIO, in which state he grew to manhood, receiving a fair education in the old log school house. His youth was spent in aiding his father on the farm, and from boyhood he has followed farming. Along with his parents he came to this county in 1853, and under the parental roof he remained till he was married at the age of twenty-four years. Mr. CAMPBELL has been married three times. In 1855 he married Angeline SUTLEY, who bore him a daughter (Angeline, now the wife of O. P. LANNER, of White county, ILL.) Mr. CAMPBELL's second wife was Jeanette GILC[H]RIST, who bore him these children: John, deceased; James, and John. In 1867 Mr. CAMPBELL married Rebecca ZUCK, and unto this marriage the following children have been born: Charles C., Sarah, Albert, Clara, Barch and Lucretia. Mr. and Mrs. CAMPBELL are members of the Presbyterian church, and he is a member of the I. O. O. F. and is a demitted member of the Masonic fraternity. Politically Mr. CAMPBELL is a staunch republican. He cast his first presidential vote for John C. FREMONT. He has never aspired to political office, but has, however, served the county one term as county commissioner.

"FULTON COUNTY FOLKS" Vol. 2, p. 108, contains another sketch of the CAMPBELL family. Much of the information here is the same as before, but a few datails of interest follow:
The saga of the Fulton County CAMPBELLs in this country goes back to an 18-year-old boy named John CAMPBELL, who arrived in Baltimore, Md., in 1815. Two years later, his parents two sisters, Jeanette and Isabella, and two brothers, Angus and Donald, followed...(Christopher) was known as a "Black Republican" because of his sympathy for the colored people and help with the underground railway through Fulton County...
This account also contains a photograph of the John and Clara (BARCHER) family. Christopher, seated between his brother, Daniel, and his apears to be of rather average build, with a long, narrow face, a full beard and dark hair.

Although most records report Christopher's church affiliation as Presbyterian, one of the Misc. Record Books in the Fulton County Recorder's Office contains the minutes of the "M.E. Church" (Methodist Evangelical) in Aubbeenaubbee Twp. which states that Christopher CAMPBELL was elected to the Board of Trustees for that church 27 MAR 1875.
Compiler received christening data, etc. for some of Christopher's children from a requested search of the records of the First Presbyterian Church in Rochester, IN. There was no reference in those records to the GILCHRIST family or to the mother of James and John C. CAMPBELL.
