      Notes

CENSUS-BIRTH-RESIDENCE: Sanders is listed in the 1820 US Census for Wayne Co., TN. He is listed as head of household in the 1840 US Census for Hardin Co., TN, and his father is living with him. The 1850 US Census for Hardin Co., TN, p 599, Household #47, lists Sanders b. 1784/85 VA (age given as 66 yrs. which conflicts with source below), Nancy, his wife b. 1791 VA and son Robert b. 1831 TN. Sanders does not appear in the 1860 US Census for Hardin Co., TN but Nancy does, although she does not for the 1870 US Census for that County.

RESIDENCES-MARRIAGE-CHILDREN: In an article entitled "Southside Virginia Austins," appearing in the "Virginia Genealogist," Vol. 5, p 148, Janet Austin Curtis states that Sanders was taxed in Warren Co., TN in 1812. He was in Smith Co., TN in 1816 when his son John was born. Sanders was back in Warren Co., TN as late as 1817, when he signed a petition to make Moses Rhea a Justice of the Peace. Sanders appears among a list of people owing the firm of Purdom & McAllister money in Madison Co., AL in 1820. Curtis thinks they were married "probably ca. 1805." [Note by compiler: According to other sources, they were married on 28 December 1851 in Lauderdale County, AL.] Curtis also lists their children, and claims that there were two daughters born before 1810, then lists only one (Elizabeth). Perhaps the other died young.

MILITARY-RESIDENCES: Sanders was mustered out of service in 1810 in White Co., TN (need military records check to document this).

BIRTH-DEATH-BURIAL: "Austins of America." Dr. Michael Austin, Editor, Vol. 1, p 61 of the Feb 1983 edition, in an article entitled: "Hollands Creek Church Cemetery of Hardin County, Tennessee." TEXT: "Sanders Austin, son of Stephen & Dorcas. b. 1782, VA and d. between 1856 (made a deed) and 1860 (Census). Source states that he was buried in an unmarked grave.

      CENSUS: 1820 p 327, 1830 p 295 Wayne Co., TN; 1840 p , 1850 p 599 Hardin Co., TN

      (2) A household headed by Sanders AUSTIN is listed in the 1820 census of Wayne County, TN. [Wayne County, TN is north of and adjacent to Lauderdale County, AL.]

Listed in Sanders' household are 2 free white males under 10 years of age; 1 free white male between 10 and 16 years of age; 1 free white male between 26 and 45 years of age; 2 free white females under 10 years of age; 1 free white female between 10 and 16 years of age; and 1 free white female between 26 and 45 years of age.

Assuming that Sanders is the free white male listed in the 1820 census as then being between 26 and 45 years of age, he would have been born between 1775 and 1794, according to the 1820 census.

Assuming that Sanders' wife is the free white female listed in the 1820 census as then being between 26 and 45 years of age, she would have been born between 1775 and 1794, according to the 1820 census.

Assuming that the other persons in Sanders' household are children of Sanders and/or his wife, those children would have consisted of 3 sons (2 of which sons would have been born between 1810 and 1820, and 1 of which sons would have been born between 1804 and 1810, according to the 1820 census) and 3 daughters (2 of which daughters would have been born between 1810 and 1820, and 1 of which daughters would have been born between 1804 and 1810, according to the 1820 census).

      (3) A household headed by Sanders AUSTIN is listed in the 1830 census of Wayne County, TN, next to a household headed by Stephen AUSTIN.

Listed in Sanders' household are 1 free white male under 5 years of age; 1 free white male between 5 and 10 years of age; 2 free white males between 10 and 15 years of age; 1 free white male between 40 and 50 years of age; 1 free white female between 5 and 10 years of age; 1 free white female between 10 and 15 years of age; and 1 free white female between 40 and 50 years of age.

Assuming that Sanders is the free white male listed in the 1830 census as then being between 40 and 50 years of age, he would have been born between 1780 and 1790, according to the 1830 census.

Assuming that Sanders' wife is the free white female listed in the 1830 census as then being between 40 and 50 years of age, she would have been born between 1780 and 1790, according to the 1830 census.

Assuming that the other persons in Sanders' household are children of Sanders and/or his wife, those children would have consisted of 4 sons (1 of which sons would have been born between 1825 and 1830, 1 of which sons would have been born between 1820 and 1825, and 2 of which sons would have been born between 1815 and 1820, according to the 1830 census) and 2 daughters (1 of which daughters would have been born between 1820 and 1825, and 1 of which daughters would have been born between 1815 and 1820, according to the 1830 census).

      (4) A household headed by Saunders AUSTIN is listed in the 1840 census of Hardin County, TN.

Listed in Saunder's household are 2 free white males between 5 and 10 years of age; 1 free white male between 10 and 15 years of age; 1 free white male between 15 and 20 years of age; 1 free white male between 50 and 60 years of age; 1 free white male between 80 and 90 years of age; 1 free white female between 15 and 20 years of age; and 1 free white female between 50 and 60 years of age.

The free white male listed in the 1840 census as then being between 80 and 90 years of age seems to have then been too old to have been Saunders. [The 80-to-90-year-old male is believed by the compiler to have been Saunders' father.]

Assuming that Saunders is the free white male listed in the 1840 census as then being between 50 and 60 years of age, he would have been born between 1780 and 1790, according to the 1840 census.

Assuming that Saunders' wife is the free white female listed in the 1840 census as then being between 50 and 60 years of age, she would have been born between 1780 and 1790, according to the 1840 census.

Assuming that the other persons in Saunders' household are children of Saunders and/or his wife, those children would have consisted of 4 sons (2 of which sons would have been born between 1830 and 1835, 1 of which sons would have been born between 1825 and 1830, and 1 of which sons would have been born between 1820 and 1825, according to the 1840 census) and 1 daughter (which daughter would have been born between 1820 and 1825, according to the 1840 census).

      (5) A household headed by Sanders AUSTIN is listed in the 1850 census of District 8, Hardin County, TN.

Sanders is listed in the 1850 census as a farmer who was then 66 years of age; therefore, according to the 1850 census, he was born in about 1784. According to the 1850 census, he was born in VA.

Listed with Sanders is his wife, Nancy, who was then 59 years of age; therefore, according to the 1850 census, she was born in about 1791. According to the 1850 census, she was born in VA.

Also listed with Sanders is his son, Robert, a farmer who was then 19 years of age; therefore, according to the 1850 census, he was born in about 1831. According to the 1850 census, he was born in TN.

      (7) Curtis, Janet Austin, "Southside Virginia Austins" [an article based on the author's article of the same title which appeared in The Virginia Genealogist, Volume 5, in 1961. Ms. Curtis lived in Williamsburg, VA at that time. That article was transcribed by Carol Robinson Austin of Garden Grove, CA, as part of the AFGS Austin-Austen Documents Digitization Project]:

SAUNDERS AUSTIN was taxed in Warren County in 1812 and was in Smith County, Tennessee in 1816 when his son John was born. He is listed in the 1820 census of Wayne County. In 1840 he was a resident of Hardin County, and his father was living with him. The family continued to live there. The 1850 census indicates he was born in Virginia 1784/5 and his wife Nancy was born there in 1791. They were probably married ca. 1805. He died before 1860 but she is listed in that census, although not in 1870. Their children were: two daughters born before 1810 (one of whom is probably Elizabeth Austin, born 10 September 1810, who married first James Davis and second Elbourn Bowles, and who was living in Saltillo, Hardin County in 1832), Stephen born 1810-12, John born 8 June 1816, David born 1818, William born 1820, Angeline born 1825 (married Henry Qualls), Archibald S. born 1826, and Robert born 1831.
