      Notes

BIRTH-DEATH-BURIAL: "Austins of America," Dr. Michael Austin, Editor, Vol. 1, p 61 presents a photograph of Stephen's gravestone in the Hollands Creek Cemetery (the old Methodist Church Cemetery) located in Hollands Creek, Hardin Co., TN. His tombstone reads: STEPHEN AUSTIN / ARMSTRONG'S / N.C. CO. / WASHINGTON / DRAGOONS / REV. WAR / BORN: 1755 / DIED: 1850. The photo caption notes that Stephen's last Rev. War pension payment was in 1844, which is probably a more accurate death year.

MILITARY: He was a Revolutionary War Soldier and his pension application states as a child, about the age of 2, (1757?) he was taken to Grayson County VA. At the age of 21 he enlisted (1776?) in the Cavalry of Major William Armstrong and Col. Washington in the Light Horse Dragoons, Gen . Green's Division, in Surry County NC. He spent 5 years in the Rev., but the last 2 years hired a substitute. After the war he went back to VA and lived there 20 years. He moved to TN and lived in Warren, Giles, Wayne, and Hardin County TN. Also lived in Alabama for 3 years , according to his pension record. His pension was granted in Hardin County, TN at which time he was living with his son, Sanders Austin born 1782 in VA. NOTE: Seattle Archives DAR Card File lists: Austin, Stephen b: Nov 1755, Pittsylvania Co., VA entered at age 21, enrolled in Cavalry of Major William Armstrong & Col. Washington's Regiment of Light Horse Dragoon's in General Green's Division in Surry County, NC.

RESIDENCES-LAND: In 1787, Stephen Austin paid personal property taxes in Montgomery Co., VA . In 1793, 1797, 1799 and 1800 he was taxed in Wythe Co., VA, and in 1795 and 1796 he was taxed in Grayson Co., VA (Ref: VA State Library Manuscripts Tax Records). In 1798 he had moved to Grainger Co., TN, where he is found as a Bondsman for the marriage license of William Austin and Rebecka Moses. In 1803, Stephen Austin and sons; Sanders Austin and Robert Austin, affixed their signatures to a petition in Grainger Co., TN. In 1804, Stephen Austin purchased the land of John Ulmstead in Claiborne Co., TN, and he gave a deed for 150 acres, in 1804, to Aaron Davis in Hawkins Co., TN (now Claiborne Co., TN), "part of a survey in Powell's Valley touching upon the lands of Norvells, Evans, and Samuel Tate, being part of said survey of A. Henderson & Company," witnessed by Walter and Susanna Evans. In 1808, Stephen Austin turns up in White Co., TN, where he was deeded land by Thomas K. Harris (Ref: White Co., TN Deed Book A, p 210).

CENSUS-RESIDENCES: In the 1840 Census of Pensioners, Stephen Austin is living with his son Sanders Austin in Hardin Co., TN. He does not appear in the 1850 US Census for Hardin Co., TN apparently because of his death prior to census enumeration.

OCCUPATION-RESIDENCES: From information researched by Janet Austin Curtis, with help from Oliver Qualls of Savannah, TN and Mrs. Orville Sharp of Florence, AL, family tradition among the descendants of Stephen would seem to indicate that he was sort of a "wagon master" who made trips back to North Carolina and Virginia and led settlers from there into Tennessee. Supposedly, he made his last trip when he was 70 years old and came back with 30 families, mostly relatives from VA and NC, who settled in Wayne Co., TN along Second Creek, in Hardin Co., TN along Hollands Creek, and in Lauderdale Co., AL, along Bumpas Creek. Since he does not show up in many census schedules, this seems like a likely explanation for these abscences.

RESIDENCES-CHILDREN: email from Joe Newcomb, Sep 12, 2010 to AFAOA genealogist Liz Austin Carlin. "On 2 Nov 1832 (Date Stephen AUSTIN applied for pension) he was 77 years and 5 months old.living with Daniel SHIPMAN & Elizabeth AUSTIN (his daughter) in Wayne Co TN (was on 1830 Wayne Co TN census w/ Daniel & Elizabeth AUSTIN SHIPMAN).

Stephen AUSTIN's care was transferred to Saunders AUSTIN sometimes between 1830-1840. On the 1840 Hardin Co TN Census he is living with his son Saunders AUSTIN. Daniel SHIPMAN has a death date of 1835/38 in John AUSTIN's family Bible. Elizabeth appears on page 256 0f the 1840 Hardin Co TN Census 8th Civ Dist as head of household: 01122 00011001. John SHIPMAN is the male under 10 yrs of age. Her father Stephen is no longer in her care since Daniel died abt 1838. Stephen AUSTIN is now in the care of Saunders AUSTIN, Elizabeth's brother. She is living near her son William SHIPMAN and her AUSTIN relatives, James J, Stephen Jr, John, and Brother Saunders Austin in Hardin Co TN."

      (4) www.findagrave.com:

      Stephen Austin
Birth: Nov. 4, 1755, Halifax County, Virginia, USA
Death: 1850, Hardin County, Tennessee, USA

Stephen Austin was born in Halifax County, Virginia, on November 4, 1755, to John Austin Jr. and Mary McBee. He married Dorcas Pinson, daughter of Delilah and Aaron Pinson, in 1775, in Grayson County, Virginia. Dorcas was born about 1757 in Laurens, South Carolina, and died April 12, 1836, in Hardin County, Tennessee. Stephen and Dorcas had these children together: William, Stephen, Saunders A., Robert, Elizabeth, John, and Rebecca.

Stephen was a Revolutionary War soldier. At the age of 21, he enlisted in the cavalry of Major William Armstrong and Col. Washington. He served five years in the Light Horse Dragoons of General Green's division in Surry County, North Carolina, but the last 2 years hired a substitute. After the war, he returned to Virginia and lived there for twenty years. He then moved to Tennessee and lived in Warren, Giles, Wayne, and Hardin Counties.

From information researched by Janet Austin Curtis, with help from Oliver Qualls of Savannah, TN and Mrs. Orville Sharp of Florence, AL, family tradition among the descendants of Stephen would seem to indicate that he was sort of a "wagon master" who made trips back to North Carolina and Virginia and led settlers from there into Tennessee. Supposedly, he made his last trip when he was 70 years old and came back with 30 families, mostly relatives from VA and NC, who settled in Wayne Co., TN, along Second Creek; in Hardin Co., TN, along Hollands Creek; and in Lauderdale Co., AL, along Bumpas Creek. Since he does not show up in many census schedules, this seems like a likely explanation for these absences.

Stephen died in 1850 in Hardin County, Tennessee, and was buried in the Hollands Creek Cemetery, Savannah, Hardin County, Tennessee.

Note: One of Stephen's many grandchildren was Martha Viannah Austin Rhea, daughter of William and Rebecca (Moses) Austin.
