      NOTES:

Compiler has little information on Howard F. PAINTER except for sketchy reports of younger generations of the GILCHRIST family. Byron GILCHRIST, compiler's uncle has been the main source of the information stated in this biography.

Per family tradition, James K. GILCHRIST, son of Thomas and Phoebe (KEELEY/KEELY) GILCHRIST, died in the Zanesville, OH area prior to the death of Thomas GILCHRIST in 1926. James had married Theresa MILLER, who was thought to have been a widow at the time she married James. Theresa had a daughter, Cecile, who would have been about three years old at the time of the Gilchrist marriage. James and Theresa, or "Beecy" as she was called, had a son in 1890, whom James named for a former neighbor and probable close friend in Fulton County, IN. Clyde Nafe GILCHRIST was about 13 years of age when his father died.

In October, 1907, "Beecy" GILCHRIST married again, this time to Howard F. PAINTER, probably a widower, with at least two sons. Between the birth of Clyde and the death of his father, "Beecy" had given birth to two more children, Ralph, born in 1893, and Letha, born in 1902. Both of the younger children died before their father, James K.'s death.

Compiler located the Howard PAINTER family first in the U.S. Census in 1910. Miracode/Soundex searches for Clyde and Cecile GILCHRIST, led to this household. Compiler did not search for other members of the PAINTER family in the index, but was later told that Ernest PAINTER, a son of Howard's, later married Cecile GILCHRIST. Ernest was killed in a fall from scaffolding at the Armco Steel Company, where he was employed.

In 1997, compiler's brother, Jim GILCHRIST, made contact with surviving members of the PAINTER family in Zanesville via the internet telephone and address listings. He spoke with Howard PAINTER, the son of Luther PAINTER, and received the information that Howard, husband of "Beecy" (MILLER) GILCHRIST, was his grandfather. Per the younger Howard PAINTER, his grandfather had two sons, Ernest and Luther, when he married Mrs. GILCHRIST. Ernest married Cecile GILCHRIST; Luther became the father of this younger Howard PAINTER. Howard and his brother, Raymond PAINTER, both still reside in the Zanesville area.
