WILLIAM LANGSTON, born 15 April 1762 in Granville County, North Carolina. Died 7 December 1853, at the age of 91 years, 7 months, and 22 days, in Illinois. Buried in the Langston Cemetery, in the vicinity of Manito, Mason County, Illinois. His wife Mary Langston, died 23 September 1838. William Langston was a son of James and Jane Langston of Granville County, North Carolina.

William Langston was probably married in Granville County, North Carolina, to Mary _____? They were living in North Carolina when their children were being born. They were:

      1. Kisiah Langston, born 7 Dec. 1779.
      2. Zorrobbel Langston, born 5 Dec. 1781.
      3. Jemima Langston, born 5 July 1784.
      4. John Langston, born 10 Nov. 1786.
      5. Rebecca Langston, born 15 Feb. 1789.
      6. Sally Langston, born 26 May 1791.
      7. Elnathan Langston, born 20 Oct. 1793.
      8. Mary Langston, born 17 June 1795.
      9. William A. Langston, born 10 Sept. 1799

[Note by compiler: According to a statement made by William LANGSTON on September 11, 1832 in connection with his Revolutionary War pension application, he lived in SC during the period from about 1793 to about 1801, during which period some of his children were born.]

      (3) William LANGSTON filed a Revolutionary War pension application (R. 6149) which was denied because he did not serve in the Revolutionary War at least six months as required by law.

In connection with his application, William stated the following on September 11, 1832:

"I was born April 15, 1762 in Granville North Carolina. . . . At 19 years of age I moved into Chatham Cty, N.C. and lived there 12 years. From there I moved into Pendleton County South Carolina for a term of 3 years. From there I removed into Barnwell Cty S.C. where I remained 5 years. From there I removed into Jefferson County East Tennessee where I lived 2 years. From there I moved into Warren Cty Kentucky for a term of 2 years. From there I moved into Rutherford County West Tennessee where I lived 8 years. From there I moved into Sevier County Tennessee and lived there a year. From there I moved back to Rutherford County West Tennessee and remained 1 year. From there I moved to Howard Cty Missouri where I lived 2 years. From there I moved back to Rutherford County Tennessee where I lived three years. From there I moved into Boone County Missouri where I lived 2 yrs. From there I moved into Rolla Cty Missouri where I lived 2 years. From there I moved in Morgan County Illinois where I now live."

It appears from this statement that William LANGSTON resided in the following places during the periods set forth below:

      April 15, 1762 to 1781 - Granville County, NC
      1781 to 1793 - Chatham County, NC
      1793 to 1796 - Pendleton County, SC
      1796 to 1801 - Barnwell County, SC
      1801 to 1803 - Jefferson County, TN
      1803 to 1805 - Warren County, KY
      1805 to 1813 - Rutherford County, TN
      1813 to 1814 - Sevier County, TN
      1814 to 1815 - Rutherford County, TN
      1815 to 1817 - Howard County, MO
      1817 to 1820 - Rutherford County, TN
      1820 to 1822 - Boone County, MO
      1822 to 1824 - Rolla County, MO
      1824 to September 11, 1832 - Morgan County, IL

      (4) A household headed by William LANGSTON is listed in the 1800 census of Barnwell County, SC.

Listed in William's household are 1 free white male under 10 years of age; 1 free white male between 10 and 16 years of age; 1 free white male between 26 and 45 years of age; 2 free white females under 10 years of age; 1 free white female between 10 and 16 years of age; and 1 free white female between 26 and 45 years of age.

Assuming that William is the free white male listed in the 1800 census as then being between 26 and 45 years of age, he would have been born between 1855 and 1874, according to the 1800 census.

Assuming that William's wife is the free white female listed in the 1800 census as then being between 26 and 45 years of age, she would have been born between 1855 and 1874, according to the 1800 census.

Assuming that the other persons is William's household are children of William and/or his wife, those children would have consisted of 2 sons (1 of which sons would have been born between 1790 and 1800, and 1 of which sons would have been born between 1784 and 1790, according to the 1800 census) and 3 daughters (2 of which daughters would have been born between 1790 and 1800, and 1 of which daughters would have been born between 1784 and 1790, according to the 1800 census).

      (5) The compiler has not found a listing of William LANGSTON in the 1810, 1820 or 1830 census. The compiler has found a listing of William's son, Wm. A. LANGSTON, in the 1830 census of Morgan County, IL; however, that household does not include a male who would have then been the same age as Wm. A. LANGSTON's father.

      (6) William LANGSTON is apparently included in a household headed by his son, Wm. A. LANGSTON, in the 1840 census of Winchester Township, Scott County, IL, because a free white male between 70 and 80 years of age is listed in that household. Wm. A. LANGSTON would have been only about 41 years of age in 1840, whereas his father, William LANGSTON, would have been about 78 years of age in 1840.

      (7) William LANGSTON is listed in a household headed by his son, Wm. A. LANGSTON, in the 1850 census of Scott County, IL.

William is listed in the 1850 census as a farmer who was then 88 years of age; therefore, according to the 1850 census, he was born in about 1762. According to the 1850 census, he was born in NC.
