He died in 1854, in Sevier County. He was a son of Thomas Atchley I and Lydia Richards Atchley. He was a member of Alder Branch Baptist Church, and by occupation was a farmer. He served in the United States Army during the second war for independence (War of 1812), having been under the command of General Andrew Jackson. It is known that he participated in the battles of Horseshoe Bend during the war against the Creek Indians, and against the British in the defense of New Orleans.
