      Will of Christopher French of Great Maplestead ERO D/AMW 2/137 [transcribed by Peter C. Nutt ]:

      In the name of God Amen the tenth day of August in the fourteenth yeare of his Maties reigne of England Ffrance & Ireland & of Scotland the Ffyftyth 1616 I Christopher French of Great Maplestead in the county of Essex millwrighte beinge sicke in body but yet of p[er]fecte mynde & good memory thankes be given to god for the same doe ordayne constitute and make this my last will & testament in manner & forme followinge Ffirst I most humblye com[m]itt my soule into the most mercifull hands of almightye god my creator hopinge by faith in Jesus Christ my only saviour & redeemer by his merits death and passion to have& obtayne full p[ar]don and remission of all my sinnes & to be made p[ar]taker of everlasting ioyes in the Kingdome of Heaven and my body to the earth from whence it was first taken to be buried in the churchyearde of Greate Maplesteede aforesaid by and at the discretion of myne executrix hereafter named for all my worldly goods by god his divine . . . dence lent unto me in this worlde I bequeath them ageyne to the worlde as my manner & forme ensuethe Item I give and bequeath unto Mary my wellbeloved wife my messuage or tenement wherein I now dwell with all singular thappurtenances called by the name of Messinge for and duringe the terme & tyme of her naturall life keepinge the same in all manner of needefull & necessarye reparcions duringe the said terme and from & after her decease I give and bequeath the said messuage or tenement with thappurtances to John Ffrenche my sonne & to his heiers upon condicion that he the said John his heiers executor administrator or assingnes shall well & truly pay or cause to be paid unto Thomas Ffrenche and William Ffrenche my sonnes to eyther of them the some of tenne pounds of lawfull Englishe money to be paid unto them in manner & forme followinge that is to say unto Thomas my sonne within one holle yeere next and ymediatelye after the death & deceasse of the said Ma[r]y my wife and to William my sonne within one holle yeare then nexte followinge and if it shall happen the said John shall my saide sonne to make defaulte of payment of & in the foresaid some of twenty pounds contraye to the former before expressed that then & from thenceforth & att all tymes after yt shall and may belawfull to & for the said Thomas & William or one of them to enter into the said messuage or tenement & into ev[er]ye p[ar]te & p[ar]cel thereof . . . the same to have holde & enioy to them & their heires or to one of them & his heires upon condicion to pay unto the aforesaid John his executors administrators & or assignes the some of twenty pounds of lawfull English money within one holle year nexte after theire or one of their entry into the foresaid tenement with thappurtances I . . . further I will & devise that yf it shall fortune for John my sonne to depart this life before the said Mary my wife that Thomas my sonne shall pay or cause to be paid unto the foresaid William my sonne the some of twenty pounds of lawfull English money in such manner and forme as the said John should or oughte to have paid the same if by force of this my will Finally all the residue of my movable or ynmovable goods quicke or dead utensils & household stuffe rights credits cattells & chattels whatsoever unbequethed I give them wholly to the foresaid Marye my wife for & towards her mayntenance of liveinge the bringeing uppe my children the payments of my debtts the discharginge of my funeral & the p[ro]bate of this my last will & testament which said Marye my wife I ordayne constitute & make full executrix of this my last will & testament desyeringe her in gods behalf to see the same hereby executed p[er]formed fulfilled & done accordinge to my trewe meaninge herein as my suertrust? . . . ee? will In testymony whereof I have hereunto sett my hand & seale the and year first above written in the presence of these whose names are hereunder written
