SIMON VAN WICKLEN . . . was born in Flatbush about 1700 and named for his maternal grandfather; no baptism is found. He married GERARDINA KOUWENHOVEN, baptized in the Brooklyn Dutch Church 7 August 1705, daughter of Nicasius Janszen and Elsie (Staats) Kouwenhoven. Simon died in Somerset County, New Jersey, between 14 August 1753 and 3 January 1755, the dates of his will (see below); the last mention of his wife may be 1 January 1757 when a sponsor at the baptism of grandson Simon Anderson was "Gertilena Van Wicklen."

They married before 25 November 1722 when Simon and wife "Dina" were baptismal sponsors at New Brunswick, New Jersey. The next year they were in Kings County for the baptism of their first child, but then moved permanently to New Jersey to take up the land his father had purchased on the Raritan River in Franklin Township, Somerset County. Dina Kouwenhove was received into the Harlingen church by certificate 11 August 1732, and Simon Van Wickelen by confession 29 March 1732, and on 9 May 1734 he was a deacon of Three-Mile Run church, under the consistory of Harlingen. They joined the New Brunswick church 1 April 1753.5 Simon appears on a Somerset County rate list of 1735, for 250 acres, 16 cattle and 16 sheep, and on a list of Somerset freeholders of 1753. His home, a typical one and one-half story Dutch farmhouse, was described by Rosalie Fellows Bailey in 1936, and today is preserved for the public by the Meadows Foundation.

"Symen van Wickle" of Somerset County, yeoman, made his will 14 August 1753. He named his wife "Dinah" and children Evert, Nicholas, Anne, Mary, Dinah, Elsee, Mattje and Seytje, his farm on the Raritan River and other property, and personal estate including slaves and (silver)plate. All real estate was to be divided equally between the two sons, who were named executors; the will was proved 3 January 1755.
