Jacobus/James Van Horne, son of John Van Horne . . . by his wife Catharine Meyer, was born in New York and baptized there in the Dutch Reformed Church, 29 June 1712; witnesses: Cornelius Van Hoorn and Marretje Myer (child's brother). He received land at Rocky Hill, Somerset County, New Jersey, from his father's estate; also a home and storehouses in New York, fronting on the dock. At death his estate also included several farms in the Manor of Cortland. On 20 Feb. 1744, as a New York merchant, he offered to sell land at Rocky Hill, and "a Variety of European Goods. . ." in New York. On 21 Jan. 1751 he was living on his farm at Rocky Hill, and at death was living at Dover near Cheesquakes, Middlesex County, New Jersey. His will was dated 29 Oct. 1760 and proved 20 April 1761 in New Jersey and 7 Dec. 1761 in New York (NJW 4:449; NYW 6:123 f.). In it he gave his estate to his two sons, John and James, both minors, share and share alike. He stipulated that he was to be buried near late wife Margaret, deceased; executors: nephews James McEvers and William Cockeroft, both of New York, merchants, and friend John Berrien of Rockey Hill; witnesses: James Cebra, Catharine Cebra, Catharine Van Horne. On 16 Dec. 1742 in the Dutch Reformed Church in New York, James married Margaret Bayard, born 24 May 1719, baptized 24 May 1719, daughter of Samuel Bayard and Margareta Van Cortland. She joined the church, 22 Aug. 1743 and received property at 85 Pearl Street from her father's estate. On the Bayards see New York Genealogical and Biographical Record 48:21. The children were probably all born in New York and were baptized at the Dutch Reformed Church.
