      Louis Dale Carothers, of Columbia Lakes, Texas, passed away on Wednesday, April 28, 2004.

      Memorial services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Friday, April 30, 2004, at Columbia United Methodist Church with Rex Carleton officiating.

      Burial will be held at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, May 1, 2004, in Big Spring, Texas.

      Survivors include his wife, Jo Carothers of Columbia Lakes; daughter and son-in-law, Jo Dale Carothers and husband, Jeffrey J. Rodriguez, of California.

      Louis Dale Carothers, 80, Columbia Lakes, formerly of Big Spring, died on Wednesday, April 28, 2004, in a Houston hospital.

      Memorial services will be held at 3:30 p.m. today April 30, 2004, at Columbia United Methodist Church with Rex Carleton officiating.

      Graveside funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, May 1, 2004, in Mount Olive Memorial Park with Dr. Dave Ring, pastor of First United Methodist Church in Big Spring, officiating.

      He was born July 28, 1923, in Breman [sic], Ind.

      Survivors include his wife, Jo Carothers of Columbia Lakes; a daughter and son-in-law, Jo Dale Carothers and Jeffrey J. Rodriguez of California.

      Memorial services for Louis Dale Carothers were held Friday, April 30 at 3 p.m. at Columbia United Methodist Church. Rev. Rex Carlton officiated the local services assisted by Rev. Greg Rogers.

      Louis passed away Wednesday, April 28, 2004.

      Graveside military services were held at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Big Spring. Pastor Dave Ring of First United Methodist Church officiated the services there.

      Mr. Carothers is survived by his wife of 59 years, Verna Jo Stevens Carothers; and a daughter Dr. Jo Dale Carothers and her husband, Dr. Jeffrey Rodriguez of La Jolla, CA.

      He was born in Breman [sic], Indiana to Jennings Laroy and Omah Ruth Pfeiffer Carothers. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Robert Carothers, Harold Carothers, and a sister, Marjorie Pattee.

      He became a Certified Public Accountant in 1949. He opened a CPA office in Big Spring as well as being Internal Auditor for Cosden Pet. Then, in 1979, he opened Louis D. Carothers CPA firm in West Columbia.

      He was a graduate of Indiana University and did graduate work at Trinity University. He worked as a Hospital Administrator for 13 years. He was a member of the American College of Hospital Administrators as well as Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants, and American Institute of Accountants.

      He was a 50-year Honorary Member of AICPA and recognized by the State of Texas for his 50-year membership as a CPA in Texas.

      Mr. Carothers was a Lieutenant in the United States Air Force serving in World War II European Theater in the 376th Bomb Group with the 513th Bomb Squadron. He was held as a Prisoner of War, liberated by General Patton. His service medals include the Distinguished Flying Cross; Air Medal with one Cluster; Purple Heart; Prisoner of War Medal; World War II Medal; European Theater Medal with four Battle Stars; and the American Campaign Medal.

      Louis was dedicated to charity through work in the Lions Club International. He was a Charter member of the Columbia First Capitol Lions Club, which he and his wife, Jo, organized. He has been a Lion since 1949. At the club level he has held the various offices including president of three clubs. At the District level he held offices of Zone Chairman, Deputy District Governor, Convention chairman, and chaired a number of District Committees. Most recently he was State Region Co-Chairperson for Leadership and Development for Districts 2-S1, 2-S2 and 2-S4. He also served as District Co-Chairperson for International Understanding and Cooperation and a Certified Guiding Lion.

      In 1963 Louis was elected District Director of District 2-A1 of the Lions organization, also serving as Treasurer of the Texas Council of Governors during 1963-64. He has served as a Director of the Texas Lions Camp, as well as Secretary, then Treasurer of the camp. He is a progressive Life Member of the Texas Lions League for Crippled Children and is a Life Member of the Lions Eye Bank of Texas.

      He chaired various committees for State Conventions and has directed both district and state queens contests. He has been active in International Convention attendance, and is the holder of the 100% District Governors Award, the Extension Award and an International Presidents appreciation certificate. He is an International Counselor, a Melvin Jones Fellow, and Jack Wiech Fellow, and a Texas Lions Foundation Fellow.

      Accordingly, if friends wish to send memorials, the family suggests they be made to the Texas Lions Camp.
