    Notes

    • (1) Zabriskie, George Olin, "Christian Barentsen Van Horn and Some of His Descendants," The American Genealogist, Vol. 44, No. 1 (January 1968), pp. 43, 46-48:

Cornelis Van Horn Jr., son of Cornelis Christiansen Van Horn . . . by his wife Margrietje Vanderburgh, was born in or near Teaneck, N.J. He lived on his father's Closter lands, was an elder in the Hackensack Lutheran Church at the time of his death. He died or was buried 12 March 1733 and was buried in the Lutheran Burying Ground at New Bridge, N.J. (Lutheran recs.). The will of Cornailes Vanhorn, of Schraalenburgh, Bergen Co., yeoman, dated 26 Feb. 1732/3, proved 26 May 1733 (NJW 2:499 f.), mentions eldest sons Cornailes, Loukas and Joannes, all land equally, each to pay ??25 to their brothers and sisters "being seven (if wife be now with child"; eldest son Cornalies, to pay in 8 years, Luke, 2nd son, in 12 years, Joannes, 3rd son in 15 years. Moveables are to be equally divided among children; executors: brothers Loukes and Johannes Vanhorn; witnesses: Yan Duru, Johannes Vanboskerck, John Morse.

With his children baptized in one Lutheran and two Reformed churches, and with no land records for guidance, we find it very difficult to obtain factual information concerning Cornelis's family. The assignment of children, their spouses, etc., are based on our best judgment under the circumstances.

Cornelis married, first, 16 Aug. 1711, at Hackensack Lutheran Church, with banns dated 16 July 1711 at Hackensack Reformed Church, Jacomyntje Demarest, the daughter of Samuel desMarets and Maria deRuine, and widow of Samuel Helling (Helm). Dr. Cole obviously had difficulty in transcribing baptism #611 of the Tappan (New York) Reformed Church: Anatue, daughter of Isack Brouwr and Ragel, his wife, was born Feb. 4, 1730 (the date being followed by a question mark), and baptized (another question mark). The witnesses were "Endrys Van Horen [another question mark], Jackemyntje, his wife." There being no Andries Van Horn, and as Cornelis's first wife was the only Van Horn wife named Jackomyntje, this entry has been used to prove that Cornelis's first wife was alive in 1730. However, it was Andries Van Buskirk and his wife Jacomyntje Demarest who witnessed the baptism in 1730. When Cornelis' Jacomyntje died is unknown, but he married, second, Marytje Pietersen, parentage undetermined. She was not a daughter of Claes Pietersen and Cathlyntje Andriessen Jongbloet, because their daughter Marytje was the second wife of Jacob Van Schyven, by whom she had children from 1730 through 1744. Cornelis married, third, 22 Dec. 1732, at Hackensack Reformed Church, Tryntje Hartje, daughter of Reyer Hanse Hartje and Sarah Jans, she baptized 16 Jan. 1706 at Tappan. No record has been found of children by the third marriage.

      Children:

by first wife (born in the Closter area)

      i. Margrietje, b. 28 Apr. 1712, bapt. 31 Aug. 1712 Hackensack (Lutheran), d.y. . . .

      ii. Annatje, b. 23 Apr. 1714, bapt. 6 June 1714, Hackensack (Lutheran). . . .

iii. Cornelius C., bapt. 8 Jan. 1716 Hackensack (Reformed).

iv. Margrietje, bapt. 1 Apr. 1716 Hackensack (Reformed). This entry and the one for Cornelius immediately above are on the same printed page of the Hackensack records. The parents for Cornelius are shown as Cornelis Van Horen Jr. and Jaquemyne DeMaree, and the witnesses as Lucas Van Horen and Aeltie, his wife. For Margritja the parents are shown as Cornelis Van Hoorn and Jacquemina DeMaree, and the witnesses as Pieter DeDy and Judick his wife; Judith, wife of Pieter Durie, was sister to Jacomyntje, the mother. We must conclude that both children belong to Cornelis Van Horn and Jacomyntje Demarest, in spite of the four month spread between the baptisms. Perhaps a clerical error is involved, or perhaps the children were twins with one too ill to have it baptized when the first one was. Williams evaded this problem by showing Margrietje as born 1717. Margrietje m. (1) Johannes Koning, bapt. on 30 Jan. 1709 New York (Ref.), son of Jacob Koning and Grietje Pietersen; (2) 11 Apr. 1733 (Lutheran), Jan Sidnem, parentage undetermined. No children by second husband. . . .

      v. Maria, bapt. 9 Feb. 1718 Hackensack (Ref.) . . .

      vi. Rachel. . . .

      vii. Lucas, bapt. 17 Feb. 1723 Hackensack (Ref.) . . .

      viii. Johannes. . . .

      ix. Daniel, b. 17 Nov. 1728, bapt. 24 Nov. 1728 Tappan.
