      Transcript of a letter dated June 28, 1887 from Benjamin FRENCH to his nephew, Joseph Wesley FRENCH, son of Jacob FRENCH:

      West Chester, Pennsylvania. June 28, 1887

      My most beloved Nephew. Yours of the 23 / inst. to hand by am. Mail of 25, inst, and after a careful reading thereof, all of which was very gradifying do my good wife, excellent daughter, and myself I proceed to give you my Ancestors as I understand them and their nativity. . . .

      My Grand Parents on my Father's side were natives of Sussex county, New Jersey, but decended of Scotch Irish. These Grand Parents died, leaving three sons, one of which was my father. . . . Uncle Aaron French located at head of Chamung River, N.Y. Uncle Jonathan French settled on the Maumee River, Ohio. . . .

      All French's tall and bony. . . .

      We know Aaron was the son of Moses French per the recording of his marriage to Mary Myers: "Aaron French, son of Mof[s]es late of Sandeston, dec with Mary Myers, daughter of Bastian Myers of Montague, May 28, 1797. The above couple have been married by me the date as above. Guisbert L. Sutfin, Justice"

      (3) Analysis by compiler of Benjamin FRENCH's letter dated June 28, 1887, as viewed in the light of information from other sources:

      Moses FRENCH and Mrs. FRENCH, who were of Scotch-Irish descent, were born in Sussex County, NJ. [Moses FRENCH is not identified in Benjamin FRENCH's letter, but the notes of Ethel and Jeff French indicate that the father of Aaron FRENCH was Moses FRENCH.] The children of Moses FRENCH and Mrs. FRENCH were:

      1. Aaron FRENCH [per Pedigree Resource File, born March 1, 1767 in NJ; died January 1, 1851 in Sheshequin, Bradford County, PA; buried in Butternut Ridge or Horton Cemetery, Bradford County, PA; married Mary MYERS; per marriage record, the couple was married on May 28, 1797].

      2. John Congleton FRENCH [per IGI, born about 1767, probably in Sussex County, NJ; per census information, born about 1770 in NJ and died after September 9, 1850 (the actual enumeration date of the 1850 census), probably in Moreland Township, Lycoming County, PA; per marriage record, married Martha MORRIS December 13, 1798 in Sussex County, NJ].

      Per Benjamin FRENCH's letter:

      (1) Aaron FRENCH settled at the head of Chemung River, NY.

      (2) Jonathan FRENCH settled on the Maumee River, OH.

      (3) John Congleton FRENCH settled in Lycoming County, PA about 1800.

      (4) All FRENCHES are "tall and bony."
