      CHILD CHOKES ON BEAN

MARY JEAN HOOKER, 14 MONTHS OLD, DIES AT HOSPITAL

Her Sister, Neva Maxine, Died May 16, After an Appendix Operation.

Mary Jean Hooker, 14-month-old daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Renzy E. Hooker, 1317 Forest street, died at 8:45 o'clock last night at the McCune-Brooks hospital, from strangulation, caused from a bean the child had swallowed about two hours before, which blocked the air passage.

Mr. & Mrs. Hooker and their children were on their way to the ice plant for ice in the late afternoon and the youngest son, Bobby, was playing with a "bean shooter." The beans were scattered on the floor of the car and the child put one into-her mouth. She became strangled.

Apparently relieved, the child was taken home and put to bed for a short time. The family later started in their car after some milk, and decided to ride past the airport. While there Mary Jean strangled again and became unconscious. She was rushed to the home of Dr. S. X. Cordonnier, on South Garrison avenue, near the airport, and was later taken to the McCune-Brooks hospital, where she was treated by Dr. Cordonnier, Dr. LaForce and Dr. E. Powers. She was given oxygen in an effort to relieve her breathing, which was spasmodic.

The child died about 30 minutes after reaching the hospital.

An X-ray picture, taken after the child had passed away, did not reveal the object swallowed by the child, since only metallic objects cast shadows in the X-ray pictures.

Surviving are her parents and four brothers and sisters, Kenneth, Betty, Bobby and Donna Ruth; two grandmothers, Mrs. Ellen Frost and Mrs. Sarah Hooker, both of Carthage, Mo.

A sister, Neva Maxine, 14 died following an appendix operation at McCune-Brooks hospital, last May 16 which is the birthday anniversary of Mary Jean. Neva Maxine was the eldest of six children and Mary Jean the youngest. Funeral services will be held at 2;30 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the First Christian Church. The Rec. C. A. Earsom, pastor, wil be in charge.

Burial will be in Park Cemetery.
