      Salem United Methodist Church Cemetery

Location: Route 104 & Salem Church Road, North of Middleburg, Centre Township

History: Originally known as Fry's Cemetery, the lot was set aside for school and burial purposes on April 1, 1840, and conveyed to George Bowersox and Henry Walter. The earliest recorded burial is that of David Walter in 1838. The cemetery was incorporated in June, 1909, as the Union Salem Cemetery Company, the first trustees being John A. Walter, Howard A. Walter and Elmer E. Shambach. Additional ground was donated by LeRoy Shambach. An Evangelical Association congregation began meeting in Fry's Schoolhouse and in 1873 built a church on land purchased from Jesse and Sophia Shambach. Shambach, pp. 236, 231-232.

Source of Inscriptions: Wagenseller, 1904; Shambach, 1968; Finsterbush, 1993-1994, 1999.

Notes: See the cemetery listing from Wagenseller's Tombstone Inscriptions of Snyder County.
