      ALICIAE LECHMERE
      Female
      Event(s):
      Christening: 31 JUL 1555 Saint Marys, Hanley Castle, Worcester, England

      [Note by compiler: This extracted christening record does not show the name of either parent of the christened child. ]

      (2) Berry, Brian J. L., "Was Mary French a Scudamore?", in The Shapely Connection, Vol. 5, No. 3 (Oct. 1992), pp. 66, 81:

      Elinoria (Alice) bp. 31 July 1555; m. Walter Hardman, whose 1604 will mentions his brothers-in-law Edmund and Thomas; d. 4 Jan. 1579/80.

      [Note by compiler: Assuming that Alice was born shorly before her christening in 1555, and that she was the same person as Elinor, she would have been about 11 years of age when she married Walter HARDMAN on 12 September 1566. In the compiler's opinion, this would have been unlikely.]

      (3) Shirley, Evelyn Philip, Hanley and the House of Lechmere, London, England: Pickering & Co., 1883, p. 14, footnote 1:

      The Parish Register of Hanley records the baptisms of the following persons, whom I suppose to be the issue of this marriage [of Richard LECHMERE to Margery ROCKE]:-

      "Alicia Lechmere, bapt fuit ultimo die Julij 1555.

      (4) Shirley, Evelyn Philip, Hanley and the House of Lechmere, London, England: Pickering & Co., 1883, pp. 70-71:

      The earliest of the sepulchral inscriptions to any of the Lechmere family of which we have any account, is the following, preserved in Habington's "Survey of Worcestershire," now in the library of the Society of Antiquaries. There are at present no remains of this inscription:-

      "In ye southe syde of ye Church, lye under a stone inlayd wth brasse ye resemblance of them whose Inscription followethe 'Here lyeth buried under this stone the body of Richard Lechmere Gentellman, who deceased 23 Mart: 1568, leavinge behynd him Margery his Wyfe, of whome he had towe sonnes, Richard & Edmund, and seaven daughters, ffrauncys, Joane, Elianor, Mary, ffrauncis, Mary, and Winefred, God send them a joyfull resurrection.'" There is added in a later hand, "a little of the brass of the lady remains, all the rest gone."

      (5) The list of children in note 3, above, differs substantially from the list of children in note 4, above. In the compiler's opinion, the list of children in note 3 should be viewed with suspicion, because it includes only those children whose christenings were recorded in the parish register. Moreover, the parish register does not list the parents of the christened children; the author "supposes" that all of those children were issue of the marriage of Richard LECHMERE to Margery ROCKE.

      The list of children in note 3, above, includes the children who are not listed in note 4, above: Elizabeth, Thomas and Alice.

      The list of children in note 3, above, does not include the following children who are listed in note 4, above: one of the daughters named Frances, the daughter named Joan, the daughter named Elianor, and one of the daughters named Mary.

      (6) In his will dated 23 March 1568, Richard LECHMERE did not mention the names of any of his children.

      (7) In her will dated 16 October 1573, Margery (ROCKE) LECHMERE did not mention any daughter of hers named Alice.
