      (2) This Benjamin HOLDEN ["Young Benjamin] is shown here as a son of another Benjamin HOLDEN ["Old Benjamin"] in order to stimulate further research. The compiler has no conclusive proof of such relationship. Moreover, much of the information set forth herein is speculative, and may not necessarily relate to the person to whom it purportedly refers.

      (3) According to Family History Library Film 568713, entitled "Revolutionary War Index: a Compilation of Revolutionary War Slips and Documented Materials from Other Sources," at least two different men named Benjamin HOLDEN/HOLDREN lived in Hunterdon County, NJ during the late 1700s. One such man, "Old Benjamin," was born in about 1728; and another such man, "Young Benjamin," was born in about 1762. These men should not be confused with Benjamin HOLDREN, who was born in about 1750 and died on 14 Oct 1844 in Nockamixon Township, Bucks County, PA, directly across the Delaware River from Hunterdon County, NJ. [See information about Benjamin HOLDREN elsewhere in this database.]

      (4) The following information about Young Benjamin is set forth in FHL Film 568713:

      HOLDEN, BENJAMIN

      • Private 3rd Regiment, Hunterdon County Militia.
      • Private, Captain Ross' Company, 3rd Regiment, New Jersey Continental Line; enlisted from the 3rd Regiment, Hunterdon County Militia, May 25, 1778, for 9 months. At the date of his enlistment he was a resident of Amwell, Hunterdon County, and was 16 years of age, 5'4" in height, and had fair complexion, and fair hair. (MSS. Nos. 3774, p. 19, and 3606.) [Note by compiler: In some sources, Young Benjamin's enlistment date is erroneously shown as May 25, 1773, rather than May 25, 1778.]

      (5) The Revolutionary War Service Records of Young Benjamin contain Company Muster Rolls and Company Pay Rolls for each of the months May 1778 through February 1879. According to these records, he served as a Private in Captain John Ross' Company, 3rd Jersey Regiment. [This Company was designated at various times as Captain John Ross' Company and Colonel Elias Dayton's Company.] These records show that Young Benjamin was discharged on February 25, 1879.

      (6) Old Benjamin enlisted from Kingwood, which is in the west central part of present-day Hunterdon County, and is less than 10 miles east of the Delaware River, separating New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

      (7) Young Benjamin enlisted from Amwell, which is in the southeastern part of present-day Hunterdon County.

      (8) As stated above, the compiler does not know whether the Benjamin HOLDEN who moved from Hunterdon County, NJ to Harrison County, VA [now WV].was the same person as Young Benjamin HOLDEN.

      (9) Men of West Virginia, Vol. 1, Chicago, IL: Biographical Publishing Company, 1903, pp. 317-319:

. . . Benjamin Holden . . . was one of the first settlers in Western Virginia. He was a mechanic and built some of the first houses in Clarksburg. He married Miss DeRumple, and they had eight sons and two daughters, as follows: Peter W., Pierson, Alexander, Thomas, Benjamin, Charles, Jeremiah, William, and Grace and Minerva. Of these sons, Peter W., Pierson, Alexander and Benjamin were Baptist ministers, and in their day were about the only preachers of that denomination in the central portion of what is now West Virginia. Charles, one of the sons, was sheriff of Harrison County from 1857 to 1861. One of the sons was a representative in the Virginia Assembly before the division of the State, and a number of the sons served in the War of 1812.
